San Anselmo is a city in San Mateo County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 66,653. The city is located on an agricultural plain west of San Francisco and northeast of Redwood City. The first European to visit the area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 14, 1602 during his circumnavigation of the world. Spanish missionaries built missions here in 1769 and 1821. In 1853, when San Francisco became a state and this led to increased trade between the two cities so that new streets were laid out near Trinity Church in downtown San Anselmo while both buildings continued to be used by different agencies until 1870 when they were combined into one building called Government House which still stands today. In 1907, Roy Gardner bought land east of downtown for $1 million dollars which he turned into what is now known as Gardner Park after himself and his wife Roye Gardner donated part of their estate back to the town for use as parkland. This event created a large influx of people who started businesses around Gardner Park like restaurants, stores and a post office before it officially became known as "San Anselmo." During World War II many people came from nearby Palo Alto to work at Naval Air Station North Island where they raised crops for food production or did other menial tasks related to war production such as driving jeeps or manufacturing ammunition. After the war ended many left town but others moved in because there were never any trees or housing developments available here so people had to build themselves around cars instead. There has been recent development here with high-rise apartments being constructed along Market Street while also construction is ongoing on a new library/mall complex called University Village which will include offices and shops next door to some old Navy barracks that have been converted into residential units
