In 1849, San Anselmo was founded by Captain John C. Fremont as a small community on the banks of the San Joaquin River. Today, it is one of the most vibrant and culturally diverse cities in Northern California. San Anselmo is a city in San Mateo County, California, located on the eastern side of the Bay Bridge. The population was 23,191 at the 2010 census. It is part of Silicon Valley. In 1849, it was part of Yolo County and became part of Alameda County. The first post office in San Anselmo opened on August 29, 1853, and remained in operation until 1911. The name "Anselmo" originated from an Italian town near Naples called Anagni (meaning "apple or fig tree"). The first settler in what is now San Anselmo was Lorenzo Toscanini who arrived on July 4th, 1847. He and his family were the first to be granted land patent #39 under Governor George C. Bartlett's Land Grant Act of 1850. By 1860 there were over 100 homes in San Anselmomo with a total population of about 900 people In 1868 Yolo County detached from Alameda County and formed its own government with its own courthouse and jail On December 21st 1870 Yolo Countys residents voted not to annex any other municipalities within their county due to objections raised by nearby Monterey Park which had applied for annexation The last post office closed on December 31st 1911 after more than 50 years in business
