The San Anselmo Naval Shipyard was established in 1883, and the first USS Constitution (1794) was launched there. The USS Lexington (1860) and USS Shenandoah (1864) were both built at the shipyard. In 1951, the San Anselmo Naval Shipyard became part of the United States Navy. The first of the modern destroyers built at San Anselmo, USS Nevada (1952), was commissioned here. Since then,San Anselmo has been responsible for a wide variety of naval vessels- including submarines, cruisers, destroyers, andLittoral Combat Ships.
