San Anselmo, California is a small town located in Marin County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,546. The name San Anselmo comes from Spanish and means "sanctuary." The first Europeans to reach what is now San Anselmo were Spanish traders and missionaries who arrived in 1776. They named the site Santa Ana because of Saint Anne, a Christian martyr who was executed in Rome in A.D. 47. The town was founded on October 21, 1853 by Levi Strauss as part of his Rancho Rinconada land grant to Isaac Chatham and James Irvine. On July 14, 1854, Strauss sold his holdings to Augustus Earle Carpenter for $10 per acre. In 1860, two miles east of San Anselmomo on Highway 1A was installed the first electric lights in Marin County with an 8-foot wire strung between poles at a cost of $1 per light! In 1881, George Hearst moved his business operations from Oakland to San Francisco and donated land north of San Rafael Bridge for a new town called Hearst City which would become San Francisco's largest suburb! He also built the Russian River Bridge across it! In 1906 Earthquake damage caused extensive loss throughout Northern California including entire towns like Redwood City (now Foster City) so much so that Hearst offered $10 million towards rebuilding efforts but only received about $5 million!
San Anselmo was founded in 1776 by the brothers José and Joaquin de Sanz as a small settlement on the stretch of coast between Santa Cruz and Monterey. The first recorded mention of San Anselmo is from 1579, when it was spelled "San-an-elmos". The name probably comes from the Natives' word "san" meaning "place" and "nelmos" meaning "shore". The town rapidly grew in population and development, thanks to its location at the mouth of the San Andreas Fault. In 1852, San Anselmo became part of California's newly formed statehood. The town's growth continued through the years, with annexation by other towns and cities before becoming its own municipio in 1912. In 1934, during World War II, San Anselmo became one of four ports that helped provide food for military troops stationed in Southern California. Over time, the port gradually lost its importance as a commercial center but continued to be used for naval activities until 1976. Today, San Anselmo is an important community located within easy reach of all types of shopping destinations including downtown Oakland and several major universities. It has also become known for its annual summer festival which features music concerts, art exhibitions, outdoor activities and more.
