In 1824, John Sutcliffe started a small grocery store on Ascot Street in San AnselmO and soon began importing coffee from Europe. By 1830, he had built an entire block of shops along Market Street, including one called The Hermitage Coffee House. In 1846, John Sutcliffe's son-in-law, Hiram Revels opened his own grocery store on Boardwalk Avenue near Pacific Beach. Over time, Revels' stores became known as "the old city merchants." In 1868, William Renshaw bought Hiram Revels' business and changed its name to The Renshaw Store. This continued to be the company's primary location until it closed in 1951. At that point, all remaining traces of The Hermitage Coffee House were gone and its legacy lived on through other businesses that operated along Market Street during this time period such as Mr. Fuzzybums (1962-1988), Joe's Pizza (1968-1984), and Denny's (1976-present).

The original grant for the town was given by Governor Figueroa on November 8th, 1825 to José María Elizalde and Manuel Nieto. San Anselmo was incorporated as a City on January 3rd, 1888. At that time it had a population of only 471 residents. In 1969, Mayor Dennis Herrera converted San Francisco's Candlestick Park into an open-air amphitheater which became known as "The Golden Gate Park". The park now has over 17 million visitors each year. In 2004, Mayor Gavin Newsom dedicated a new plaza at the western end of The Golden Gate Park called "Golden Gate Park Plaza" in honor of his late wife Diane Newsom who served as mayor from 1997 to 2001. In 2008 Councilwoman Rebecca Kaplan dedicated an outdoor garden called "Anselmogrados" adjacent to her house in District 2A within The Golden Gate Park Plaza just outside of MacArthur BART station

San Anselmo is also home to Marin County's only shopping mall - Pacific Mall - which anchors a major shopping center that includes several high-end restaurants and stores as well as an outdoor amphitheater used for concerts and other events.
