The San Bernardino Air Force Base is one of the most significant military installations in California. It was founded in 1948 as an air force base, and has been home to the United States Air Force since 1947. The base currently houses three Squadrons: the 1st Bombardment Wing (1 BW), 3rd Bombardment Wing (3BW), and 5th Bombardment Wing (5 BW). It also houses a number of other units, including the 12th Space Command and Headquarters for Air Intelligence Agency. The original purpose of this airbase was to provide support for bomber forces during World War II. In 1970, 3 BW joined 1 BW onsite at San Bernardino AFB. This addition increased bomber support available to American troops fighting in Vietnam War while also increasing training opportunities for fighter pilots and radar operators stationed at our base. Today 3BW conducts bombing missions from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson outside Anchorage Alaska as part of Operation Neptune Spear which investigates potential North Korea nuclear weapons programs activities. Additionally, 3BW is responsible for carrying out worldwide exercises with partner nations called Combined Forces Exercise (CFE) Saber Hawk/Eagle Jump exercises which simulate combat scenarios between USAF assets and NATO allies across multiple geographic locations throughout Europe etc.). Overall, this adds up to a very busy wing that supports many mission sets simultaneously! In 1994 5 BWjoined 3BW onsite at San Bernardino AFB after being activated there earlier in 1990 as a result of 4BW moving from Edwards AFB CA enroute to Futenma AB Japan following 9/11 attacks! This added another level of bombers onto our local area which makes it difficult not have any aircraft assigned permanently or rotational wise 😕 However 5 BW does plenty of deployments both here at San Bernardino AFB & worldwide so overall it still functions pretty smoothly!

That year, the USAF also deployed the A-6 Intruder in support of Operation United States Air Force Assistance to Spain (OUSAAS). The A-6 was equipped with an ECM suite and carried out airstrikes against Spanish targets. This action helped improve US relations with Spain and help to prevent communism from taking hold in Europe. In 1962, the USAF deployed the McDonnell Douglas C-130 Hercules as part ofOperation Neptune Spear. This operation was conducted to support NATO's efforts in Afghanistan. The C-130s were used to transport troops and supplies across large distances and were known for their ability to fly at high altitudes. The C-130 also had a number of advanced technologies that made it one of the most efficient ground transportation vessels ever developed. In 1969, the USAF Deployed Boeing 747 Aircraft as part of Operation Castle Bravo II. This operation was conducted to provide humanitarian assistance to earthquake victims in Mexico City. The 747s were used for cargo, passengers, and firefighting services. They also had a number of advanced features that allowed them to handle heavy loads effectively. In 1978, the USAF Deployed Airbus A330 aircraft as part ofOperation Eagle Claw II..This operation was conducted to support President Carter's effort against Nicaraguan president Somoza Andrade. The A330s were used for intelligence gathering and security services operations near Nicaragua's borders

In 1814, the area that is now San Bernardino was a small village named Morongo on the slopes of Mount Shasta. For many years, it consisted of only a few families who grew grapes and raised livestock. In 1874, when Yosemite National Park was established, Morongo became one of its first ranger stations. San Bernardino's earliest known inhabitants were Native Americans who lived in the area for thousands of years before European explorers arrived in search of new land to explore. The Tongva tribe were the first people to permanent reside in what is now San Bernardino County. They hunted and gathered plants and fruits near where modern-day Interstate 10 lies today. In 1769, Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolà explored parts of California and found the present-day town of Morongo on Sept. 12th. He called it "Nootka," which means "place where there are no trees" in reference to nearby Mount Shasta. In 1793, Mexican governor Manuel Nieto granted Rancho Niguel to Francisco Cámpora for his rancho nitre (or saltpeter) mine at Bidwell Canyon located about four miles northeast of downtown San Bernardino today. The grant also included an unincorporated community called Encino that was southeast of downtown and east of Highway 10A/ US 101/ State Route 30/ San Antonio Road today (now part because much development took place around Encino during its time as an unincorporated community). The Mission Santa Cruz de Asís church cornerstone was laid by Father José Gomez on Decatur Day, Nov 25th, 1812 from a piece taken from Pico del Estero over which he had led a group reaching Monterey Bay two days earlier with American missionary Juan Bautista Barrera as leader & guide dog; they had successfully landed at Monterey after being lost at sea off southern California on Aug 20th aboard HMS Beagle commanded by Rear Admiral John Byron Fuller some 920 miles south westward along coast Of Tierra del Fuego
