The area that would become San Bernardino County was part of Rancho Viejo for a time before becoming part of 1844 United States territory when Mexico ceded it. The name “San Bernardino” is from Spanish meaning “fortress” or “hillock” and it was given to the area because it had many such hills. In 1871, a post office called Big Bear became operational in what is now Orange County. In 1881, one year after incorporation as a city by an act of the state legislature, San Bernardino City Limits were established with a population of just over 100 people. Growth continued through annexation by other municipalities through various acts until 1911 when the city limits were repealed and all land within them became annexed into Riverside County with a population over 1 million people. The area currently known as San Bernardino has been populated for more than 10 thousand years and evolved greatly during this time.
