The San Bernardino Valley is a region located in the eastern part of California, United States. The valley was named for Mission San Bernardino, which was founded in 1795 by Father Junípero Serra. When Valley residents began to populate the area in the 19th century, they brought with them their military traditions. The first militia unit organized in the area was Company A of the 2nd Battalion, 9th Cavalry Regiment, on March 3, 1856. In 1857, an act passed by Congress created and funded a volunteer cavalry brigade called “The 1st Volunteer Infantry Brigade (San Bernardino)”. On November 15th of that year, company C of this brigade fought at Boracay Island against Filipino forces under General Antonio Luna as part of American Expeditionary Force during the Mexican-American War. In 1919 and 1920 respectively, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors established two military camps within walking distance of each other: Camp Goodwin and Camp Inyo. These camps were used to house returning World War I veterans and their families as well as para-military forces such as marines who had served aboard ships docked at Stockton Harbor before being transported via train to San Francisco or Sacramento for discharge. Today there are still remnants of these units scattered throughout various neighborhoods within town boundaries; however active duty service no longer exists within any branch or regiment within the U.S Military today due to budget cuts implemented since 9/11/2001 alongside many similar reductions across all branches throughout our military including Defense Department spending overall which has decreased by over 60% since President George W Bush took office in 2001). In 1881, following completion of construction on what would become El Monte Road, Waddell named his community "San Bernardino" in honor of both Sepúlveda and George Custer, who had been killed in action at Washita River Valley near Topeka two years earlier
