The San Bernardino Coast Guard has been providing service to the community since 1892. The coast guard is responsible for protecting the harbor, rivers, and coasts in and around San Bernardino County. In 1892, the first Coast Guard station was established in San Bernardino. The station served as a stop on the California Stage Line. Since then, the coast guard has grown and changed significantly. Today, they provide services such as fisheries patrol and search and rescue. They also have an air-defense mission which includes intercepting enemy planes over Southern California. The coast guard also provides outreach to local schools during school hours to promote safety awareness among children. San Bernardino, California is a city in southern California on the border of Orange County and Riverside County. The population was 21,954 as of 2010. It is the county seat of San Bernardino County. Founded in 1871 as an agricultural community by Mormons who arrived from across the United States, San Bernardino quickly became known for its annual International Auto Show and other cultural events. Over time, their way of life changed as they began to interact with more powerful groups such as the Mexican government and Anglo settlers beginning in the late 18th century.
