In 1854, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all inhabitants of Los Angeles County except those living on Mission Peak be deported pursuant to provisions contained in Mexico's new federal Constitution that banned slavery. As a result, manylos Angeles Californios (Mexican Americans) fled to San Bernardino where they found protection from possible military action at what is now Lake Arrowhead Park Preserve near Interstate 15 and State Routes 566 and 905 east of Interstate 10). The city of San Bernardino is located in Riverside County, California, about 25 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The population was 67,653 as of the 2010 census. It is one of the most populous cities in Northern California and has been called the "City of Angels." San Bernardino was first settled by Native Americans in 1827. The name stems from a blanket san-barea meaning "a place where there are no trees," which may have referred to an area near the current city limits that was undeveloped at the time. In 1849, Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico was founded in what is now San Bernardino and named for St. Gabriel (who had transported Jesus Christ across Earth). By 1860, over 80% of the population here were Mexican American mestizos. In 1861–1862 General Antonio López de Santa Anna fought a bloody siege against American forces at Fort Tejon on behalf of Mexico during America's Civil War. A large percentage of this town's Mexican American citizens serving in military units participated in or supported Santa Anna's fight against Ulysses S. Grant and his Union army during that conflict; some remain buried here today under General Lopez' monument erected in 1924. On November 14, 1794, three small groups led by José Rizal traveled from Manila through Baja California to Sonoma County to stage an uprising against Spanish rule there before ultimately returning home safely on October 12th following intense skirmishes with troops loyal to Spain throughout their journey northward into North America...Rizal’s trip signaled a new era for Latino Americans as they actively sought social and political rights away from their colonial masters... Unknown to many until after his death seventy years later, Rizal also authored novels such as “El Pájaro” (the bird) and “La Liga del Norte” (the League of Natives). This highly significant event helped spur immigration efforts within Hispanic America and eventually established U.S.-Mexico relations which have remained strong ever since... The City Council recognized San Bernardino as its own municipio on February 22nd 1886 pursuant to resolution passed by then Mayor Manuel Nieto... On July 26th 1907 City Manager Héctor Aguilar presented Mayor Nieto with a gift certificate for $5 per month worth of groceries when he became elected mayor...On July 29th 1907 Aguilar presented Mayor Nieto with a check for $500 payable directly to him that represented 10% raise in gas taxes authorized by then-Governor Hiram Johnson)...In 1909 San Bernardino annexed part of neighboring Riverside County which resulted in an increase municipal budget from $1 million to $4 million... During World War II almost all industries closed down due to rationing but rapidly regenerated under rearmament programs; plant employment peaked at nearly 100%, reaching peak production levels early 1945 before slowly declining back below 50%.. In December 1951 more than 60% minority males worked full time jobs outside Ofschool programs while 30% females did so; rates continue unchanged even after increased participation rate among both genders since post-war decade - Racial/ethnic diversity remains high despite low unemployment rates During 1990s many people moved out west because it seemed like everything changed around there :(
In 1824, San Bernardino was founded as a small outpost on the banks of the San Bernardino River. It was named for Saint Bernard, who had been martyred in nearby Tehachapi Pass. The first post office opened in 1828 and within two years, the town had a population of 10 residents. In 1840, it became an adobe mission with 12 priests and 30 laymen living in huts on high ground overlooking the river. The mission was abandoned in 1851 when Mission San Gabriel replaced it at the behest of Bishop Fernando Feliciano. The town began to grow rapidly after gold was discovered near by in 1859. By 1865, it had a population of 200 people and by 1870, it had increased to 434 people. In 1875, San Bernardino became part of Riverside County when it was organized from portions of Los Angeles County. In 1907, its incorporation status was changed to city status and then to full cityhood in 1912. The original downtown core that is now known as Old TownSan Bernardino was built up around what is now City Hall Square between 1850 and 1860 while much of later development took place around Third Street east of City Hall Square (including much of today's Riverside Boulevard). buildings south-west corner Third Street were constructed during this time including: the rudimentary but well-maintained Masonic Lodge Building which still stands today; Post Office building; First Baptist Church; Red Cross blood donation center; School District Headquarters building also known as "Mother Goose House" (later renamed "Pioneer Courthouse"); and finally Justice Building - all completed during this time frame although most likely only used for administration purposes until supplanted by City Hall Square circa 1900s
