It has a population of over 322,000 residents according to the 2010 census. In 1969, SWAT teams were activated to help with protests against Utopia III, an American space mission that was being conducted by NASA at Mojave National Preserve near Palmdale. On December 14th, 2015 two gunmen opened fire on deputies responding to a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex located in Redlands; one shot dead Deputy singled out from his party killed 5 people including 3 sheriff's deputies before he fatally shot himself (the first shooting in what would become known as 'The Christmas Massacre').
