In San Bernardino, California, the United States Navy has been deploying military gifts to servicemen and women for over 50 years. On December 12th, 1941, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and America was plunged into World War II. The Navy responded by deploying a large gift shipment to the area in support of American war efforts. The large gift shipment arrived on December 16th and contained nearly 2,000 items including uniforms, equipment, food, and toys for sailors and Marines stationed in Southern California. The Army also contributed a large amount of goods such as tanks and artillery pieces. Santa Barbara County’s Christmas Tree was decorated with donated items from the Naval fleet during the holiday season. While the deployment is long gone (the last gifts were delivered in early 2019), the Gifts that Gave Us Freedom campaign remains an important part of Navy history in San Bernardino. Through this campaign, members of the navy community have shared their memories of deployments through photos and stories. On Dec. 5, 1941, the USS Constitution (CV-4) was deployed to San Bernardino, California in support of the United States Naval Forces Southern District. The ship’s crew and passengers received a gift from the Japanese government in honor of their servicemen who had died during World War II. The USS Constitution presented a katana to the Mayor of San Bernardino on Jan. 15, 1945.
The city of San Bernardino is located in the Mojave Desert, about 110 miles east of Los Angeles. The population of the city was around 21,000 at the time of the shooting rampage that took place on December 14th, 2015. The attack left 14 people dead and 53 injured. Prior to this attack, there had been a number of shootings in and around San Bernardino over the course of several years. In 2013, two men were shot and killed after exchanging gunfire with police officers outside a restaurant near City College; two months later, two men died after an argument inside a local bar led to a gunbattle outside. In November 2014, four people were killed when they drove their car into a group of pedestrians walking on University Avenue; in March 2015, two men died after shots were fired at them from a vehicle in an alley off South Stonington Boulevard. In October 2015, one person was shot dead and five others were wounded during an altercation between three males and a female outside an outdoor market; less than month later another person was fatally shot by police while breaking up a fight between family members inside their home. In February 2016 three people died after being struck by lightning while out for walks in Riverside County; less than week later another person was critically injured when he got caught in crossfire during an attempted robbery near Interstate 5555. On December 14th 2015 several rounds were fired from outside the Pulse nightclub before gunman opened fire inside killing all those who attended including many young children aged 10 or younger who had just come out for their night shift as dancers (the rampage lasted until 12:30am). This atrocity has reignited calls for stricter gun control laws which have so far not been effective in curbing mass shootings like this one however with more than 20 such incidents taking place across America every day now it's clear that we need to do something!
The navy has a long and proud history of deploying gift baskets to servicemen and women around the world. From the early days of naval artillery, through to today’s air force and marines, the navy has always been there for its troops. This tradition began with Admiral Sir John Hawkins’ gift of a basket of refreshment in 1609. The navy now deploys an estimated 2,000 baskets per year, made up of a variety of items including clothing, foodstuff, cigarettes and other consumables. The navy also sends parcels as part of their Christmas tree charity project. This year, packages will be delivered to military bases in Afghanistan on Boxing Day in order to raise money for the war effort. In 2013, they also sent a package to Iraq during Christmas season in order to collect donations for military charities. In recent years, gifts have become more personalised than ever before. This is evident in the number of individual mails being sent as part of The Navy Joke Team campaign which aims to show support for servicemen and women while deployed overseas. This year alone there have been over 50 different jokes send out by members of The Navy Joke Team team across various branches of the armed forces
The USS Constitution was the flagship of the United States Navy during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It served as a warship of the Mediterranean Fleet, American Expeditionary Force in Europe, and later in Asia. The Constitution was also used for ceremonial occasions including processions, state funerals, and inaugurations.
The city of San Bernardino, California was founded on December 2, 1817 by Father Gabriel Morongo and the Sisters of Charity. The City limits were first laid down in 1824 when they included all of what is now Orange County. In 1872, the City Limits were redefined to include most of Riverside County. On February 14, 1893 a fire destroyed the old Mission San Bernardino de Porres which had been used as a jail and prison for over 50 years. The mission remained standing until 1909 when it was replaced by the current Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels. On October 28, 1914 an earthquake struck southern California devastating many towns and cities including San Bernardino with extensive damage and loss of life. With only $7 million in insurance policies available at that time, the city lost more than 1/3 its entire population within two months due to destruction and loss of business activity. Reconstruction began immediately with public works projects such as new streets, gutting buildings, rebuilding hospitals and schools etc.. However there continued to be problems with funding which caused significant delays and cost overruns throughout 1915-1916 including a proposed subway system that would have connected downtown Los Angeles with Outlet Park in Westminster just east of downtown San Bernardino
On December 14, 1892, San Bernardino County was created from parts of Riverside and Orange counties. It was named in honor of the Countess of San Bernardino, who had donated land to the new county. The first election for San Bernardino County commissioners was held on March 3, 1893.
