The first people to live in San Bruno were the Ohlone tribe who called it Pekin or Pekinah. In 1851, San Francisco Bay Area resident John Sutter founded the City of San Francisco and named his new town after his native land, Germany. The city's first mayor was George Jones. In 1872, a post office called San Bruno was established and soon became a thriving agricultural community with a large beet field and several small businesses. However, by 1890 farming had given way to more manufacturing activities as steel production boomed inCalifornia due to new found resources like coal and oil. In 1902, Mayor John Wickersham replaced Jones with fellow Democrat Hiram Johnson as part of an effort to modernizeSanBruno along Western Electric Lines standards for then-new cities such as Los Angeles and Reno Nevada. By 1906 there were over 100 businesses in downtownSanBruno with 1,500 residents employed in manufacturing and other trades including food processing & packing plants; electric light companies; auto repair shops; banks; physician’s offices; public schools (now known as “Alamo High School”); grocery stores (now known as Safeway) and some brick kilns which produced bricks for building construction local homes into the 1920s but stopped operations around World War II because of air-raids that destroyed most industrial facilities in California during those years After years of growth following Johnson's initiatives however stagnation ensued until Mayor George Bickerton revived downtown redevelopment efforts led by developer Leland Stanford Jr., son of Stanford University namesake Leland Stanford Sr., beginning around 1970 through a revitalization plan called "The Plan." That program focused on creating mixed-use neighborhoods comprising professional & commercial areas near BART stations while preserving older buildings within walking distance for use as housing or office space . This strategy has resulted in an increase in job opportunities within DowntownSanBruno while also attracting investment from outsidevestors looking to capitalize on its potential including Salesforce), Googleplex), Apple( now Caltrain Station)), Facebook)and other tech companies which have relocated their headquarters within DowntownSanBruno over time
The first Europeans to see San Bruno were Spanish missionaries in 1769. The town was founded by the Mexican-American José Joaquín Moraga on a small plateau near present-day San Francisco. In 1821, part of Alta California was acquired by the United States, and San Bruno became part of the newly created Department of California. In 1849, it was renamed after General Antonio Vallejo, then governor of Alta California. The city's population grew rapidly during the Gold Rush era and peaked at over 20,000 in 1854. However, following the nearby Donner Party's winter journey through Central Valley in December 1847–January 1848,San Bruno's popularity waned and its population declined steadily until it reached 607 in 1880. By 1910 its population had shrunk to 498 and it is now a census-designated place (CDP) with a total area of 8 square miles (20 km²).
