At its peak, there were over 120 Coast Guardsmen stationed at San Bruno. In 1946, the Headquarters of the Northern California Regional Command was moved from Santa Cruz to San Bruno as part of an effort to consolidate all coastal guard functions throughout Northern California. The Headquarters remained until 1984 when it relocated back to Santa Cruz. Today, the Coast Guard Station at San Bruno operates as a law enforcement detachment with jurisdiction over much of northern Marin County including Tiburon and Sausalito. In addition to providing security for local businesses and residents, they also provide search and rescue service for people who may have gone missing or been unaccounted for during holidays or other special events.

In 1825, a small community was started near University Avenue and El Camino Real with about 25 residents. The first post office opened in 1827. In 1841, parts of Los Altos (now Menlo Park) were annexed into San Bruno; this annexation created new neighborhoods on both sides of Highway 1 between Manzanita Road and Interstate 280. By 1850, there were over 200 people living in San Bruno proper; 60% were white Anglo-Saxon Protestants and 40% were Japanese Americans who had been forcibly brought toCalifornia during World War II as labor force for shipbuilding at Burlingame Naval Shipyard
