San Bruno is a town in Santa Clara County, California, United States. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. It is located on the San Francisco Peninsula and shares borders with Palo Alto to the south and Menlo Park to the north. The name comes from Spanish mission San Buenaventura (later called Mission San Francisco), founded by Franciscan missionaries in 1776. The original village of San Bruno was located near what is now South Street and West Avenue. In 1847, following gold discoveries at Sutter's Mill in nearby Sacramento, many European settlers came to California looking for new land to claim. Among these were John Cranch, who bought 640 acres (256 hectares) of Rancho Rinconada east of present-day downtown San Bruno; Gideon Biddle, who acquired 2,500 acres (1 kilometer²) of Rancho Rinconada west of downtown; and George Atherton, who purchased 2 square miles (4 square kilometers) of Land Grant land east of present day Atherton Road. On November 15th 1847 Jules Dumont set off an explosive charge on top of Mount Davidson in order to explore potential mineral wealth buried beneath its surface. This event became known as "Dumont's Dilemma" because no further mining took place until 1849 when prospectors Roger Morse and Jesse James discovered coal seams underneath the mountain during their exploration for a new mine site about three miles away from where Dumont had left his explosives. When news spread throughout California about this discovery it created a frenzy among miners eager to find similar deposits throughout their state which led President Ulysses S Grant to allot 500 millionacre (20 km²) area within Nevada specifically for mining operations in what would become known as the California Gold Rush era (). In 1851 incorporation took place under the name "San Buenaventura". The first post office opened in 1850 with Wm Higginson as mail carrier. By 1860 there were 20 businesses operating there including flour mills, saddlery stores, wagon shops etc.; several hotels such as Hotel de Anza were built soon after; two newspapers: "The Californian" and "The Bay Citizen"; one school district: District No 4; five churches: First Baptist Church North Clarendon Park & Methodist Episcopal Church South Euclid Avenue; two trails: Telegraph Trail running northeasterly from Carquinez Strait past Point Reyes National Seashore then turning easterly through Marin County into Sonoma County before entering Napa County

The town of San Bruno, California is located in Santa Clara County and has a population of approximately 85,000. The first person to settle in what is now San Bruno was José Francisco de Anza who arrived in 1769. He erected the first adobe building in the area which still stands today. The town was named for General Mariano Vallejo who fought against Spanish forces at the Battle of Don Juan de Monterey in 1821. The town also received its name from Commodore John D'EBARGO who led an American attack on Morro Bay on November 8, 1825. San Bruno began as a small agricultural community that grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to its location between Palo Alto and Stanford universities. In 1906, the city became incorporated and quickly became one of Silicon Valley's most important economic centers with its emphasis on technology companies and research institutions. During World War II, San Bruno played a major role in the development of naval aviation by providing housing for Naval Air Station Moffett Field personnel and manufacturing ammunition for Navy aircraft carriers. After the war, San Bruno experienced rapid growth as a result of several waves of migration including Jews (from Europe), Chinese (from China), Koreans (from South Korea), Japanese (from Japan), and Mexican immigrants. During recent decades, San Bruno has seen significant redevelopment with new businesses being established along State Route 237 including medical facilities, law enforcement agencies, restaurants/bars/cafés/nightlife venues,and more. Many local residents continue to thrive within their communities while working to support downtown business owners which continues to grow as well.
In 1853, the first permanent settler in San Bruno was George W. Smith, who bought land from the Mexican government for $1 per acre. In 1865, a group of Englishmen named the Missionaries of San Francisco purchased 2,500 acres east of the Alamo and founded what is now known as Mission San Francisco de Asís.
