San Bruno is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 26,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is situated on a peninsula that juts out into the bay. The first Europeans to visit what is now San Bruno were Spanish traders in 1769-1770. They named it Point Reyes because of the rocky headland at its mouth. The headland was located on what would become section 8 of cities and towns code #2 (now Pleasanton) which started off as part of Rancho Entre Rios de los Balboa y Vallejo de la Loma de San Mateo. In 1821, portion of Rancho Vallejo became part of Mexico following its acquisition by Americans during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). As an American territory, Mexico used point Reyes for military purposes until 1853 when it reverted to Mexican control and point Reyes became part of US Territory Marin County until 1906 when it became a city under US jurisdiction

In 1849, San Bruno became the first city in California when it was incorporated as a result of the state’s new land grant program. The town was named after Captain George A. Sanborn, who explored and charted the region in 1847. The name “San Bruno” is also found on a plaque at the former site of Fort Point San Francisco which was built by General John C. Fremont in 1837 to protect San Francisco from pirates and other raiders. The town quickly began to grow due to its natural resources; silver mines were discovered nearby and soon enough, businesses sprang up to extract the valuable metal. In 1860, San Bruno voters passed a ordinance setting aside 1/8 of an acre for each inhabitant in order to build a public square. This made San Bruno one of the most politically active towns in California and helped contribute to its rise as a center of commerce and culture during the Gold Rush years. During World War II, imported labor from Japan helped make San Bruno an important military base while also helping support wartime production within California’s failing agricultural economy. After the war, however, many jobs left town as post-war conditions improved with economic growth throughout California. Today, tourism remains one of SAN BOROIros mainstay industries—a fact that has contributed significantly to its current status as one of Northern California’s leading financial communities
In 1868, the first post office was established in San Bruno. In 1916, the San Francisco General Hospital was built on what is now Fort Point Boulevard. In 1951, California State Route 9 became a state highway and part of the National Highway System. The city of San Bruno annexed much of unincorporated Sonoma County in 1974. San Bruno City Council adopted a resolution recognizing Chinese American Heritage Month in 1984. In 1990, the city’s first light rail line opened from downtown to the University Park area.
