At that time, San Bruno was a small town and gun buying was done primarily through word of mouth. Smith's purchase allowed him to start his own firearms business and continue to sell handguns to local law enforcement officers and civilians. In 1906, John J. Madden purchased a shotgun from Henry Cockerill and became the first person in the city to be licensed as a handgun dealer. The following year, Madden opened his doors to the public and continued selling handguns until 1939 when he closed his store due to World War II prohibition of firearm sales. During prohibition, San Bruno's only store owned by an individual was located at 101 E Street which acted as the city's carry-out shop for residents who couldn't purchase firearms themselves. In 1970, Mayor Bruce Ratner passed Measure A which made it illegal for anyone under 21 years old to possess or buy any handgun without having been previously registered with the city police department. This measure led to the opening of severalgun stores withinSan Bruno over the next few years including John J Madden's former location at 101 E Street which reopened as Guns & Ammo in 1974 after undergoing renovations overseen by then City Manager Don Wassell (now Mayor Ed Lee). The store continued operations until 1984 when it was closed due to economic reasons; however, Guns & Ammo still remains in operation as a museum today adjacent to City Hall on 2nd Avenue in San Bruno

The city of San Bruno was organized on November 15, 1847. The first post office in the city was established on December 10, 1847. In 1853, the California State Normal School was founded in San Bruno and it is now known as UC Berkeley. The City of San Bruno annexed the unincorporated communities of Astoria and Rossmoor on May 1, 1901
