In 1916, Lt Colonel James Atherton purchased 10 acres adjacent to Point Lobos from Captains Sutter and Westphal for $25 per acre. This site became Atherton Air Force Base which later became part of Edwards Air Force Base after World War II ended. During World War II (1941-1945), American servicemen stationed at Atherton AFB furnished many troops with necessary supplies including food, gasoline, ammunition, vehicles and other items needed by their units in Japan or Europe
