San Bruno, California is a city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 138,682 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of Silicon Valley and is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the United States. The first Europeans to visit what is now San Bruno were Franciscan monks who founded a small town there in 1776 as part of their missionary work in Northern California. The original land that became San Bruno was purchased by John D. Rockefeller in 1892 from surfer and businessman Don Menzel for $3 million. The city's name comes from two early pioneers - Father Junipero Serra and his son-in-law José Sarabanda - both of whom had been inspired to found a small Catholic mission near Pico Alto after seeing an ad for a ranch there.
