A year later, Alvarado granted Mission Santa Cruz de la Serra to Franciscan friars who had founded missions in northern Baja California including La Jolla. Father Junípero Serra installed the first mission in 1797 but abandoned it due to lack of resources a few years later. In 1847, General José Joaquin Murrieta bought Rancho Rinconada from Pedro Delgado for $5,000 and built the Pinole Hill station on it next door to Our Lady ofKNights Church which served as headquarters for his Mine Warrants Department during that time period. The mine was discovered in 1849 and became known as "Munro's Gold District" after John Munro who explored it with prospectors William Tingey and George Hearn in 1851-52; their claim was eventually purchased by American Mineralogist James Hutton who named it "Hutton's Reef". In 1862-1863 Captain Robert Fulton exploring alongshore off Point Reyes Peninsula discovered oil wells near what is now town center while shipwrecked on nearby shoreline; this led to increased oil exploration alongshore across entire country during 1860s-1870s.; however no wells were developed until 1880s when new methods of drilling were developed utilizing water injection fracking techniques followed by horizontal wellbores.) San Bruno is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 54,713 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The city's history can be traced back to 1847 when land was donated by Captain John Sutro to the Methodist Episcopal Church and Mission Santa Clara de Asís for the establishment of a new mission town in what is now Marin County. In 1850, San Bruno incorporated as a town under the name of New Albion. A fire that destroyed most of downtown on May 14, 1859 did significant damage to its civic center which was rebuilt with funding from American Express co-founder Ezra Taft Benson and his wife Elisabeth Dodge Benson. In 1865, it became part of San Jose and lost its charter as an independent municipality due to protests by residents who felt their rights were being violated by SJSU president Lorenzo Snow (an appointee of Governor George Hearn). In 1886, after winning an election against incumbent mayor James Larkin with more than 60% of the vote,[2] William Hylan became mayor and led the city through several years of growth during which he helped create what is now known as "The Downtown Experience".[3][4] Growth slowed during World War II because many businesses closed down or moved out because of rationing; however, it picked up again following the war's end and reached its peak in 1950 with nearly 50,000 people living in downtown.[5] However, during this time there were also large-scale changes taking place such as redevelopment around First Street (now Center Street) that caused some problems for pedestrians and cyclists[6]. On July 15th 1990 Californication took place when Mayor Hylan votedYes on Proposition 8 resulting in 59%majority for gay marriage becoming effective nationwide without any state or local legislation being required first. This event has been called oneofthe biggest landmarks in San Bruno's history
