The San Buenaventura Ventura Air Force Base gift history begins with Col. Edward J. Helms, Jr., who served as the base's first commander in 1949. The Gift of a Boeing 757-200A to thebase in 1977 was followed by the gift of an Airbus A319-100 tothe base in 1988. In 1998, the basetook delivery of its first Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. On November 10, 2009,the basetook delivery of its second Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.
San Buenaventura Ventura is a small city in Ventura County, California. The population was 25,958 at the 2010 census. It is the only city in Ventura County and the second largest city in Los Angeles County. The name means "the good news" or "the blessed one". The first mention of San Buenaventura was in 1297 when it was part of the mission of San Fernando de Arroyo. In 1881, an ad for a land grant for farmers called Rancho Santa Margarita opened up on what is now Main Street. Incorporated as a town on November 15, 1892 by J[ohn] C[harles] H[eineman], it contained only 7 people and had no water or power. The economic development of San Buenaventura comes from its location between Los Angeles and downtown LA; its close proximity to various transportation hubs including both Air Traffic Control Centers and Highway 101; as well as its business opportunities which include manufacturing, real estate, agriculture, healthcare services and retail businesses. Additionally, there are several music festivals that take place throughout the year such as South By Southwest (SXSW) and Coachella Valley Music Festival which attract numerous artists to perform near San Buenaventura.
The airforce gift history goes back to the beginning of aviation. In 1917, America’s first military flying service was founded and its first plane was purchased by the United States Air Force. The service flew reconnaissance missions over England during World War I. In 1948, the USAF became a separate branch of the United States Armed Forces and began providing aerial refueling services in support of NATO allies. In 1961, the USAF became an operational branch and began conducting airstrikes against Cuba in order to overthrow Fidel Castro’s government. The airforce has played a leading role in many wars throughout history, including both World Wars II and Afghanistan. Today, the airforce is one of the most powerful militaries on Earth with more than 215,000 active duty personnel and nearly 120 thousand reserve members. The air force has a wide range of capabilities that include bomber planes, fighters, helicopters and satellites. It is also responsible for numerous scientific projects such as Apollo 11 which helped lead to human space exploration; Project Sunray 2 which aimed to develop solar energy sources; Androstane-3b which was used in ground troops’ underwear; American Thoracic Society Awards; National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) – Contractor Award for Exceptional Achievement in Atmospheric Sciences (CAAAS) – Martin Marietta Medal for Flight Research (MRO).
Designated as an airforce gift in 1959, the Aerojet Rocketdyne AS-12 Model A was the world's first operational scramjet-powered aircraft. The plane was delivered to the USAF on October 12th, 1959. With its scramjet engine, this aircraft quickly became one of America's most iconic and popular airplanes.
The San Buenaventura Ventura, California town was founded in 1847 by Spanish settlers. The town name is derived from the word "buen" (good) and "ventura" (venture). The original residents were a group of Mexicans who had been forced out of their homes in Mexico City during the Mexican Revolution. Some of these Mexican immigrants settled in what is now downtown Ventura. Others traveled westward and joined theenos who had moved to populate Rancho Santa Anita in 1835. In 1847, the first post office was built in Ventura, and soon there were several other settlements established nearby including Fillmore, Agua Caliente, and Carpinteria. By 1850, Ventura had a population of about 100 people and it became an independent municipality with its own government. The first school was built in Ventura in 1851 as part of a larger educational effort led by local officials. On July 1, 1860, the first earthquake struck California measuring 7 on the Richter Scale which left many communities struggling for years afterwards. So strong was this quake that parts of Los Angeles County collapsed under the weight of loose rocks and earth that littered the area aftershockingly! Ventura fared relatively well however as few buildings were destroyed or damaged beyond repair. One noteworthy factor may have been that some residents closed their businesses during this time period to avoid contributing to what can only be described as chaos caused by aftermath tremors throughout much of North America! A new courthouse was built close to modern day Park Boulevard just east of I-5 shortly before World War II began to break out which helped contribute to overall prosperity within our community at that time! After more than 50 years as an unincorporated municipality with its own government & economy, Ventura incorporated as a city on November 3rd, 1984 following approval from voters via ballot measure! Today’s vibrant & inclusive city offers opportunities for all types of citizens to thrive together while keeping our history alive!
The first European to sight San Buenaventura, in 1542, was Gaspar de Portolà. In 1821 it became a parish with the name of San Buenaventura. The population of the parish numbered only 836 in 1850 and 518 in 1900; but by 1920 it had grown to 1,835 and was included within the new city of Ventura.
