The United States Military has been present in Ventura County since the first World War. The Ventura County Army National Guard was activated on December 14, 1942 and has served in many different capacities both during and after the war. Today, there are over 2,000 military members serving with the Ventura County Army National Guard. In addition to providing support to local law enforcement and the county government, these troops can be seen conducting various missions throughout the county including search and rescue, disaster relief, and counter-terrorism activities. One of the most well-known deployments of the Ventura County Army National Guard was during Operation Neptune's Spear which took place in Afghanistan in 2001. Over sixty soldiers from our unit were deployed with Task Force 151 which participated in combat against Taliban militants. This event is also celebrated each year by holding a military celebration at our regional park located near downtown Ventura.

However, during World War II, there were large numbers of Japanese American residents who lived in Ventura and other parts of Los Angeles County. After the war, many Japanese Americans moved to Japan and some returned to live in America while others emigrated back to Japan. In 1965, the City Council designated Ventura as an official Racial Minority Community within Los Angeles County which helped further integrate this community into society. Today, San Buenaventura is one of the most diverse communities in Southern California with a wide variety of people from all over the world living here together.
