The city of San Buenaventura Ventura, California was founded on November 17, 1847 by Captain Gabriel Mora and his brother-in-law José Antonio Herrera. The name “San Buenaventura” means the Place of Peace. It is located in Ventura County, California on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County. At its peak in 1920 it had a population of over 120,000 people. Captain Gabriel Mora was born in 1595 in Granada, Spain and arrived in America as part of the Conquistador expedition in 1621. He became a vaquero on the Santa Fe Trail and married María de la Luz y Pacheco on December 12, 1646. They settled at San Fernando Valley where they built a small cabin called La Casita del Conejo (The Cage at the Fork). In 1714 they moved to Rancho Simi Hills which became part of Rancho San Buenaventura when Ventura County was partitioned into two sections during Mexican rule. Diego Soriano sold them part of their rancho to Juan Bautista de Anza for $10 per acre on July 1, 1778. In 1847 Captain Gabriel Mora founded what is now known as downtown San Buenaventura with his home La Casita del Conejo as its first building.. Three years later he erected an adobe jail which still stands today near Broadway and Washington Streets.. In 1851 he organized a volunteer fire department which served all parts of town.. In 1860 he donated land for school purposes which became Stuyvesant High School.. In 1881 Captain Gabriel Mora donated land to create Market Street Cemetery which remains one of the most popular shopping areas in town today ..Captain Gabriel Mora died in 1862 after many years service to this community.. His wife María de la Luz mora continued to live there until her death in 1850 followed by their son Francisco Javier Mora who lived there until his death also aged 50 years... After Francisco Javier's death his widow Margarita moved back into La Casita del Conejo but soon gave up ownership due to health concerns... Her son Ernesto took possession and ran it until 1928 when it passed through several families before being acquired by Fritzi Ziegler who kept it until 1948 when it finally ended up at City College where it is currently stored…It has been said that without Captain Gabriel Morales there would be no modern day san buenaventurism because without him we would not have access to all kinds of cultural experiences available throughout Los Angeles County
The first Europeans to visit San Buenaventura were two Franciscan friars, Father Junipero Serra and Father Francisco de la Cruz, in 1769. The mission was founded by the founder of Mission Santa Clara, José Ortega y Gasset. The first Capuchin friar to arrive was Antonio López in 1792. In 1823, the Spanish crown gave San Buenaventura its own parish and built a convent on the present site of the present cathedral. In 1886, the city fathers decided that an Italian-language newspaper should be established in the city and named La Giornale Italiana (the Italian Journal). On January 1, 1888, it became an official part of San Francisco.
