San Buenaventura Ventura was founded on November 3, 1853 by Spanish missionaries as part of the Rancho Cucamonga mission chain. The first post office in San Buenaventura Ventura opened in 1871. The city has a Mediterranean climate (Köppen: Csa), with mild to cool winters and hot summers. Monthly average temperatures range from 17–25 degrees Celsius (63-79 degrees Fahrenheit). Precipitation averages around 1,500 millimeters (60 inches) annually, making it one of the driest major cities in North America. The first post-independence Spanish settlement in what is now Ventura County was on the San Buenaventura Peninsula. In 1821, Manuel Nieto and his family founded the town of San Buenaventura on what is now the corner of Park Boulevard and Main Street. The original mission church, La Purísima Trinidad de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, still stands today. In 1830, José Huerta built a rancho (farm) near present day Ventura City in order to raise horses for cavalry use in Mexico. By 1835, he had purchased land extended eastward from Ventura County by Rancho Jurupa to include part of what is today Santa Paula. In 1847, following Mexican independence from Spain, Huerta sold his rancho to José Antonio García who named it Rancho San Buenaventura after himself. In 1865, cattle ranchers Charles Goodyear and John Atherton started small dairy operations at present day studio City Center while George Hearst established a large oil refinery at Harbor City. In 1886, Agustín Castro founded the first winery in Ventura County with 5 acres of vinesyard on Point Mugu overlooking Santa Paula Bay. Castro continued to operate his winery until 1907 when he leased it to Louis Renault who renamed it Chateau Renault Paramount Hills after himself. After World War II ended and America gained its independence from Spain as well as other countries within her borders, local property ownership changed hands more frequently than ever before with many people coming and going throughout the county over the years including several famous families such as those of Carranza and Fenton whose businesses thrived until they were forced out by Prohibition-era regulations banning alcohol production in California. On November 1, 1948 voters approved Proposition 2 creating Ventura County Equalized Tax District which levied a one-time assessment equal to $2 per capita on all real estate parcels over an acreage limit regardless of residency or subject matter; this act helped spur development around Point Mugu including much of downtown Ventura where commercial buildings began popping up immediately followed by homesites along Park Boulevard becoming increasingly popular among locals seeking easy access to freeway traffic without having their yards disturbed by highrise buildings located directly across the street providing some degree of privacy for their properties despite still residing within easy reach for commuters living minutes away during rush hour conditions without having any option but drive into town for morning coffee or evening dinner if desired instead opting for fast food restaurants located closer to work or shopping centers served by public transportation rather than driving long distances every time you wanted something particular within walking distance like you did prior to prohibition).
