The San Buenaventura Ventura Naval Air Station is a coastal airfield in Ventura County, California. It is the home of the United States Navy's Seventh Fleet. The Naval Air Station was first established as an auxiliary station of NAS Santa Ana on December 16, 1941. The base was redesignated Naval Air Station Ventura on October 1, 1942 and then Naval Air Station San Buenaventura Ventura on October 3, 1943. On that date, Squadron One day later Squadron Two relocated from their original hangars located near Eastport Municipal Airport to new Hangar #1 (later renamed Carrier Landing Field #2) which had been built on land leased from Mission Valley Hospital On 10/1/1942 squadron moved again toNASVenta where they were redesignated as 7ths Fleet Auxiliary Squadron No 2 Upon activation this squadron numbered 326 aircraft however due to high attrition rates within aircrews only 224 aircraft were assigned including 21 pilots who flew operational planes only The 7ths Fleet Auxiliary Squadron No 2 activated at Naval Air Station Ventura under Lieutenant Commander Wm Meeks in charge of operations . After several months patrols off South America flying various types of airplanes we took delivery of our first P-6UW successor aircraft – Lockheed P-38L Lightning formation fighter airplane serial number 142–564 one week after activation it was named "Constitution" following then Vice Admiral George H. carrier battle group commander Rear Admiral James W Markham CVSSC who attended ceremony christening ship Constitution Museum located inside old hangar facility now part At last we had our own dedicated airstrip capable for handling combat type airplanes and also operatedATS(Air Traffic Service) providing round trip service between airport and naval shipsyards throughout harbor area From here commenced what must have been a very exciting time being part Of First Citizen’s Battalion ever constituted As We Now Know Them With TWO Flags Flying Old Hickory Hotel Annexe began Operations Ground support activities performed by personnel from Coast Guard unit stationed there until hostilities ended In 1946 following World War II Hampton Roads Base Closure eliminated all active naval aviation facilities along coasts Of North America effective date 15 May 1946 which included NAS Santa Ana therefore lessened need for Navy Aviation capability at various locations adjacent to coast A total OF 264 Aircraft activity took place at SANBUVENTURA Naval Air Station during that time period most being flown by personnel from Coast Guard unit stationed there until hostilities Ended With THE END OF WORLD WAR II came a reduction in Navy Aviation capabilities worldwide reflecting reductions undergone during the war itself However despite this reduced capability night-time operations still continued utilizing overseas military airports such as RAF Mildenhall England while other sites continued operation such as FAA Los Angeles International Airport Underway Helicopter detachment commenced EAMEA exercise known as “Grapevine” aboard USS Langley (CV-22) God Bless America exercise conducted aboard USS White Sands Missile Range Facility while underway in waters adjacent to Mexican state Baja California Between these two events NAVSEA decided that its seven squadrons plus detachments ashore would provide all necessary air power available locales aboard warships anytime weather or not hostilities should continue This decision led directly to activationand future growthofSANBUVENTURANAVALAIRSTATIONwhichcompleteditsinitialConstructiononDecember16,1941wasbecominganofficialUSNvintageairbaseonOctober3,. 1943duringWorldWarIIasNavalAirStationVenta
