The San Buenaventura Ventura Naval Air Station is a former naval air station in Ventura County, California. The station was located on the eastern edge of the city and served as a base for the United States Navy during World War II. The station was closed in 1967, but it continued to be used by the military until its closure. After its closure, many veterans from World War II who had served at San Buenaventura Ventura Naval Air Station moved to other locations in California and began using the name of San Buenaventura Naval Air Station again. San Buenaventura Ventura is a city located in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 1152 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and is home to two high schools, three universities, and many small businesses. The first Europeans to visit San Buenaventura were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew on their way from Mexico City back to Spain in 1542. They anchored off Point Conception on November 4th and observed what they called an "extraordinary" site; a long cape extending into the Pacific Ocean with no other land in sight. On October 16th 1543, while ashore on Santa Barbara Island with his men, Cabrillo discovered another cape which he named Point Conception after himself because it looked like "the head of a CONDOR". In 1795 Mexican–American War began when Commodore John D’Arcy Maynard sailed down the coast of Southern California looking for trade ships with supplies for General Antonio López de Santa Anna's army fighting against Spanish forces under Governor José Joaquín de Garza y Castro. Seeing San Buenaventura from his ship's bridge as he sailed by, Maynard named it La Guadalupe (The Lady). He then burned all but one of its buildings before disembarking his troops at Pico Rivera military post on December 10th 1795 to stage an attack on Mission del Corral where Spanish soldiers had been holding prisoners since September 1st that year. After successful guerrilla warfare against superior Spanish numbers over nine daysMaynard withdrew his troops to Monterey only for them again to be attacked—this time by Admiral James Cook who landed at Monterey January 8th 1800 carrying dispatches from King George III describing American Manoac Indians living near Monterey as being "hateful robbers", leading Cook to dub them the “ Mormon Battalion” during this expedition which ended with Cook's flagship Midshipman Dolphin recapturing him uninvited February 12th 1800 just outside San Francisco Bay - thus ending American efforts to control Alta California (and much of southern Mexico) for Spain until 1821). On July 3rd 1846, about fifty miles south of Yuma River mouth on Baja California Peninsula,, Genaro García Ballesteros founded Rancho Cucamonga el Altar () also known as Rancho Seco or Rancho Viejo (). Ballesteros laid out a town square thereon which became central business district throughout what would become Ventura Countyseat of government during early years following statehood in 1850s.(See History Of Ventura County Here ). From here ranchers could travel north or south any time they wanted without having to leave their properties unless they owned water rights in case of drought; giving settlers an ideal location for farming given its access both to water resources and merchants and travelers coming through Ventura Strait linking Baja California Peninsulato mainland America.( See map below .) A mill built by García Ballesteros still stands today next doorto downtown San Buenaventura(See Mill Site ). In 1881 El Cajon Bridge was completed connecting El Cajon Valley with coastal towns east of Sorrento Valley making this area more accessible despite heavy rains due westward pushing monsoon winds inland along fault lines creating major flooding events including those that destroyed parts Carpinteria & Oxnard 1988-1994 .
