The San Carlos Army National Guard's 15th Infantry Brigade, which is headquartered in San Carlos, California, was first activated on November 10, 1862. The brigade was redesignated the 15th Infantry Regiment on February 14, 1864 and again on July 1st of that year as the 15th Infantry Brigade. On October 1st of 1865 the brigade was redesignated as the 3d Battalion (15th Infantry) California Volunteers. The battalion served with distinction in both World War I and World War II. On January 26, 1951 a new battalion was activated within the brigade at Inglewood and served until it disbanded in 1957 when unit colors were discontinued from service with the guard brigades. In 1959 a regiment-level expansion took place within the brigade when it became authorized to consist of two battalions instead of one under command of a colonel heading both battalions simultaneously. This resulted in detachments being organized at Bakersfield (1959), Livermore (1960), Lancaster (1962), Murrieta (1964) and Oxnard (1966). A detachment was also activated at El Cajon in 1969 but this unit disbanded after only one year due to budgetary shortfalls. In 1973 a battalion-level expansion occurred when an infantry battalion was authorized which resulted in units being organized at Downey (1973), Santa Ana(1974), Claremont(1976) and Northridge(1978). In 1984 another regiment-level expansion took place when two battalions were authorized which resulted in units being organized at Hawthorne Heights(1986) and Torrance(1988). These expansions allowed for more direct control over individual battalions by squadron commanders rather than commanders commanded through detachments or regiments/brigades level organizations. In 1992 another battalion-level expansion occurred when an armored cavalry squadronrons were authorized providing armor support for infantry operations. This allowed for increased flexibility throughout brigade organization resulting in units being organized at Fullerton(1992) and Pomona Hills(1996). San Carlos (population: 67,000) is located in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles County, about 25 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The town was founded in 1887 by Scottish-born fur trader and gold prospector James Buchanan within sight of his new discovery at Sutter's Mill. The name "San Carlos" wasán Spanish for "Saint Peter." The first post office was established in 1892, and the first store opened in 1895. By 1910, San Carlos had a population of 10,000. In 1912 the community erected its own water tower to provide drinking water for its citizens and for local businesses. A fire destroyed the original school building in 1915, but a new school was built that same year. The town developed a healthy economy with enterprises such as meatpacking plants and breweries until World War II when production shifted to defense manufacturing. After the war, San Carlos experienced rapid growth as an agricultural center due to increased acreage bought by farmers from other communities in central California. By 1990 there were over 40 businesses operating in San Carlos with a population of 66,500 residents. Today San Carlos is an attractive shopping and dining destination with many interesting architecture and historical relics dating back to its early days as a small community bound by mountain ranges on three sides and ocean on one side. There are several golf courses located within minutes' driving distance of town; both public and private golf courses offer excellent opportunities for amateur or professional play alike; horseback riding can be enjoyed throughout much of the year; fishing is popular among locals and visitors; theater events are held often around Christmas time; alcohol is available at most stores open late into the night; bicycle storage yards are plentiful throughout town;and there are several churches which serve as important social arenas throughout the year

In 1821, Mexico City ceded the Presidio to California as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The name "San Carlos" was given to the town by Captain Fernando Rosas in honor of his friend and mentor, Don José Antonio Belgrano.
