The United States Army arrived in San Carlos, California on February 14, 1846. The first post was established at the Presidio of San Francisco. On July 16, 1847, the U.S.Army Post of San Carlos was created and named for General Don Manuel Dominguez who served as its first commander. On October 14, 1861, General Phillip Sheridan moved his Headquarters from Fort Roughnecks to San Carlos and designated it Camp McDowell. A new Mission Chapel was erected here on November 25 of that year to serve as the Soldiers' Chapel until it became a convent in 1862 when all military services were discontinued in California. In 1865 Camp McDowell returned to US Army control with the re-designation of it Cavalry Barracks No 1 where it still stands today although now used by both the Marines and Navy Department.
What is San Carlos, California? San Carlos is a city located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 25,811 in 2010 and it is the second most populous city in Kern County after Bakersfield. The area that would become San Carlos was first settled by Native Americans who called it Yuba City. After Mexican independence from Spain, General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna founded missions here including Mission San Rafael Arcangel and Mission San José del Oroño. In 1836, United States troops burned down both missions to prevent them from becoming Mexican land grants. Rancho Los Alamos was granted to George Custer during the American Civil War for his services as a scout for General Ulysses S. Grant’s army. His rancho included some of the best land in Kern County and produced cattle, horses, hay, apples, grapes and other crops until 1971 when it was donated to the University of California at Davis for research purposes only. Today much of what used to be rancho Los Alamos is within city limits or near them because university buildings were built on top of former rancho lands In 1847 two small towns were started near present day downtown: Springerville and Morongo Valley. They soon amalgamated into one town which was named San Carlos after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna’s mission settlement here on October 24th of that year – three days before Mexico achieved its independence from Spain The original inhabitants were mostly Hispanic Californios ( Mexicans ) who arrived by invitation or choice of Captain Juan Bautista Alvarado who had been sent out by Governor Manuel Micheltorena with orders to explore this part of northwest California In 1850 an adobe building known as “The Old Barracks” stood where East First Street now stands in downtown San Carlos Thisadobe building served as a jail for about fifty years until 1906 when it became the first school in town . It burned down on February 10th 1906 . A new brick courthouse replaced it but it too caught fire on December 5th 1912 . It again burned down on May 2nd 1914 but this time there were no casualties In 1916 an act authorizing annexation by Kern County was passed by Congress which became effective January 1st 1917 On April 17th 1917 Mayor Pacheco proclaimed “Granada Day” throughout all district including San Carlos where military units quartered kept watch over events leading up to Mexican Independence ceremonies that took place at Coahuila Hall inside Monterey Park

In 1821, the Mexican government awarded land to six men named José Gabriel María de San Carlos for their active defense of Mexico City during the Mexican-American War.
