San Carlos is a town in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay. The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish traders and missionaries who came in search of rich gold and silver mines in 1824–25. The town was founded by men from El Sobrante on November 16, 1849 as part of a trading post called "El Cuchillo" (the knife). The name arose because during Mexican rule, all Native Americans were considered criminals and hence had no rights under law. As a result, many people in this region chose to rename their towns after things that made them feel better about themselves - such as San José or Solano Heights - but El Cuchillo never regained its previous popularity. In 1860s two brothers named James Pinyon built Adobe Walls near the mouth of the creek that forms today's downtown core; this Adobe Walls remains one of San Carlos' most popular tourist attractions today. One theory suggests that James Pinyon may have named his home after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna – another namesake for nearby city namesake San Francisco – because he felt like he had been given back his land after being captured by Mexico at Buena Vista Creek (now Yerba Buena Island). The first inhabitants of what is now San Carlos County were Native Americans who lived near present-day Hearst Castle. In 1839, John C. Frémont explored the area that would become San Carlos County and named it after his friend and mentor, Santa Catalina Island (now Catalina Island National Monument). At that time, there was no real settlement within the present-day San Carlos City Limits; rather, all of this land was used by Native American tribes for hunting grounds, as well as for fishing and agriculture. In 1849–50, Don Pedro Carrillo de la Vega occupied what is now downtown San Carlos after defeating Mexican forces at the Battle of Palo Alto. Upon his victory over Mexico’s military power in this battle—the first major engagement on U.S.-Mexican soil—Don Pedro decided to make San Carlos the principal town in Alta California under his new governance system. This system enabled him to rule over many towns throughout Alta California while still maintaining control over their political life through elected officials known as adobes or “governors” (from alacaliforniano meaning “highlanders”). The adobes slowly became fewer and further between until only a few dozen remained by 1870 when General Antonio López de Santa Anna took control of Alta California following Mexican independence from Spain. After months of fighting against Spanish troops led by General José Joaquín Deguerra y Salinas at the Battle of Soledad Creek on October 15th1870—the largest cavalry engagement in American history up to that point—López de Santa Anna ordered General Martínez Tejeda to occupy San Carlos so that he could take charge of the defending Mexican forces there instead of dealing with Spanish troops directly. As a result of this action by López de Santa Anna, much historical evidence exists documenting how early Californians developed their own indigenous cultures including pottery making and basketry before coming contact with European settlers during this period (see Starr et al., 1990). A survey conducted in 1884 reported that nearly half (47%)of all households in North Pomona had Indian blood alone; 5% were Anglo-Saxon but included both Indian bloods as well as white English ancestry; 14% were Chinese; 2% were Japanese; 1% Irish/Scottish; 0% African American; 1% two or more races) . Between 1850–1890 approximately 80 %of total population growth occurred outside populated areas within 10 miles either side Of Fresno County seat(Mendoza & Hsieh 1980). There are several theories about why such large proportions (~80%)of population growth occurred outside populated areas: internal migration due to competition for jobs with newcomers from other parts of America & Europe seeking similar opportunities – particularly those associated with mining industry – external migration due to war or invasion prompted by strategic location within expanding states such as Nevada & Oregon – demographic shifts brought about by increasing populations density leading to increased agricultural production which then lead ultimately to industrialization
