San Carlos is a small town in the Inland Empire of California. It is located on the San Andreas Fault, about 30 miles east of Los Angeles and 120 miles north of San Francisco. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit San Carlos was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 15, 1769. He named it La Paz because he had found an abundance of apples there. The Mission Santa Clara de Asís (founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1821) grew up around this time and became one of the most important missions in California. In 1853, during Mexican War II, United States forces burned down part of the mission while occupying Mexico; this event is known as the firing on the mission controversy. In 1872, a group of American miners led by prospector George Hearst moved into San Carlos from Tuolumne County and began building a town around their discovery of gold near Yosemite National Park. By 1893, when rail service arrived to bring people and goods to and from San Francisco, San Carlos had become an important transportation hub for both locals and visitors alike due to its location close to two major thoroughfares—the State Route 44 corridor running east-west through eastern Contra Costa County and Interstate 5 running north-south across central Los Angeles County—and its natural resources including watermelons, grapes, apples, oranges and olives.

The history of San Carlos, California is dotted with massacres and battles fought between the Spanish and Native American cultures. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now San Carlos County wereaos traders looking for new trade routes. In 1821, three men, José Armijo, Pedro Cárdenas and Francisco Peralta, journeyed up the Santa Cruz River from Peru to find a route to California. They named their new settlement San Carlos after two of their companions killed by Indians on the way back from this trip. In 1846, Mexican Americans who had fought for Mexico in the Mexican War staged a rebellion against Mexican rule in San Carlos County. This violence continued until 1848 when General Antonio López de Santa Anna proclaimed Californias independence from Mexico. A small group of Californios (non-native Californians) living in what is todaySan Luis Obispo County decided to stay and fight for Mexico while most of the rest left for Independence Tree Valley where they founded Rodeo City. When General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna arrived in 1850 he discovered that some people under his command were still fighting for Mexico and ordered them all arrested or killed. When California became a state in 1850, many of these non-native Californians found themselves out of work and without homes so they moved into the hills around San Carlos near present day Hearst Castle (now part of Hollywood). Over time there was continuous immigration from other parts of America as well as international migration: lumberjacks came through during the early years; metalworkers followed during World War II; agricultural workers arrived during the late 1960s; then came high-tech jobs with Latinos coming increasingly throughout recent decades. Today there are about 100 Hispanic residents living on campus at UC Berkeley alone! During this time period there also occurred several significant events that have shaped modern life in San Carlos County: 1) The opening up of California by General John Cranch led to increased gold mining operations; 2) The establishment of local governments with elected officials responsible for services such as education and firefighting; 3) The 1906 earthquake which destroyed much downtown Los Angeles including much important cultural artifacts such as Mission Dolores Chapel; 4) The arrival of Japanese Americans during World War II who were interned at Camp Shilshole near Topaz Lake before being sent eastward via train across country
The town of San Carlos was founded in 1853 by Pedro C. Sanchez and Manuel Nieto, two Spanish settlers. The first post office was established in 1856, and the name change to San Carlos after the battle of Palo Alto on May 6,1857. In 1868, the townsite was purchased by George Hearst and his brother-in-law John P. Morgan for $5,000. On October 15, 1870, San Carlos became a city under the rule of California's new state government.
