The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish soldiers in 1769. In 1821, a party of Americans under the command of Commodore John Sutter discovered and claimed San Carlos Island for America. The island was named after San Carlos de la Raza, one of the largest Mexican Loyalists who helped fight for United States independence from Spain. The first school on San Carlos was established in 1827 by Rev. George Bancroft. In 1868, two American prospectors named Hinkle and Goldsworthy discovered gold on the island and began developing it into a mining colony. By 1870, they had founded an independent government called Colony of California with themselves as its headquaters. However, this colony failed to make any money because there was no gold present on the island. In 1874, American investors bought out Hinkle's colonists and turned them into a permanent US presence on San Carlos Island by granting them land comprising most of what is now Silicon Valley. This effectively made Silicon Valley an American possession that would not be ceded back to Mexico until 1984 when it became part of Proposition 10 (the Mexico Nationalization Act). The growth of technology led to increased visitation by foreigners on San Carlos during this time; in 1911, Japanese tourists set up shop on Santa Cruz Island adjacent to San Carlos about half way between Palo Alto and Menlo Park because they could not find anything better available in California at that time.
