According to the 2010 census, San Carlos (population: 4,501) is a city in Ventura County, California. It is the county seat of Ventura County and the largest city in that county by population. The racial makeup of San Carlos was 83% white, 11% black or African American, 1% Native American, 2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, and 2% from other races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5%. The first European settlement in what is now Ventura County was made by José Nieto and Francisco Vasquez on March 21st 1797 when they established the Mission Santa Ynez de la Cañada de Tolosa on land that now includes parts of Ventura and Los Angeles Counties. The following year Nieto married Inés Margarita Escobar who also became Mexican consul at Monterey Bay. On October 10th 1800 Father Junípero Serra arrived with his party from Monterey Bay with orders to found a missions near present-day Santa Clara Valley. At first there were only six men with Father Serra but as time went on additional missionaries arrived including Mariano Valenzuela in 1803 who builtMission Concepción y del Carmen which served as the nucleus for many future Missions throughout Southern California. After years of construction various adobe buildings were completed around this mission including San Carlos Barracks which still stands today as one of America's oldest municipal buildings dating back to 1853. In 1836 an Act of Congress authorized the erection of a fortification wall along the coasts of Orange County and Ventura County as part of Castle Simi Act #15 then calledFort Simi (Straits Of Gibraltar). The wall consisted of two earthworks measuring 6 feet wide x 30 feet long with bastions rising up to 12 feet above ground level each side where cannon could be placed for firing into Surrounding Waters On July 28th 1840 General Antonio López Adobe founded Rancho Buena Vista just east of modern day Santa Maria Canyon Road about 8 miles NW corner Of present day Cathedral City & north side Of Antelope Valley . This rancho contained 3 square leagues , later expands to 9 square leagues . There are several sources indicating that this land granted by Mexico to Adobe may have been located near what is now downtown Carlsbad Caverns National Monument

In 1881, Englishman Augustus Thornton became the first white man to set foot in what is now San Francisco when he traveled along what is today's Market Street. By 1850, there were over 200 residents living in and around San Carlos City. In 1851, Father José Gomez organized a militia to suppress Native American uprisings and defended the town fromattack by Apache warriors led by Chief Manuel Borrego. The town's growth continued with the arrival of European immigrants, including Germans and Italians, who began arriving in increasing numbers during the late 1800s and early 1900s. During World War II, General Douglas MacArthur called upon San Carlos to provide troops for his amphibious landing on Iwo Jima; however, few residents volunteered to serve because they saw no immediate need for their services. After hostilities ended in 1945, many of these veterans returned home while others found new homes throughout California.
