In 1955, the California National Guard was activated to help with the Contras in Nicaragua. The San Carlos detachment of the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines was sent to Little Managua and helped support Operation Neptune's Spear. The battalion returned home in 1957 and disbanded. In 1960 the battalion re-formed at Camp Pendleton and served as an amphibious assault unit during the Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1969, 1/8 Marines was again activated to help Puerto Rico after it became a US territory following the Treaty of Paris. The San Carlos detachment deployed to San Juan and participated in combat operations against Fidel Castro's rebels until 1973 when they were mustered out of service.
San Carlos is a small town in California, located about an hour's drive from Los Angeles. It was founded in 1871 by Europeans who came to the area after gold was discovered in the nearby Sutter Hills. The town has a population of just over 2,000 people today and is home to both San Carlos High School and the San Carlos Bandits baseball team. The name "San Carlos" comes from Spanish for "hill of saints". In 1881, some European immigrants found bones belonging to saints buried near the present-day intersection of State Route 159 and Old Highway 99. A shrine soon sprung up around these remains, with pilgrims coming from all over to visit. The first post office opened in San Carlos on July 9, 1881. A few years later, a school was built on Railroad Avenue. In 1902, the name of the school was changed to San Carlos High School (later renamed West Valley High School). Today, it is one of the largest high schools in California. In 1916, when World War I started, San Carlos residents volunteered for military service and raised money for war supplies. After the war ended, they returned home and continued this support until 1924 when they merged with neighboring communities to form East Valley Village (now known as Downey). In 1932, when Ladd Library opened its doors in downtown SanCarlos under sponsorship from Mrs. Alice Morse Ladd-Powell (founder of Radcliffe College), SanCarlos became one of only two towns in southern California without a library system at that time! The first branch library opened on May 5th 1934 by Mrs. Mildred Jahnke Kapp (founder and first librarian of La Habra Unified School District) within walking distance of each home! In 1955–1956 voters approved bond issues which funded construction of new libraries throughout East Valley Village including SAN CARLOS LIBRARY! San Carlos was founded in 1769 by Father Francisco Xavier de Aguiar and his wife, Teresa de la Cruz. The mission of San Carlos is to provide education to the native people and promote Christianity. The population of San Carlos grew rapidly in the 1800s, reaching 2,500 by 1821. However, the Mission had little impact on the local culture or life style until after Mexican independence in 1821. In 1828 a large group of Californios led by José Joaquin Cámpora journeyed from Monterey Bay to San Carlos with intentions of establishing a new capital for California. While at San Carlos they met with Father Aguiar and discussed the possibility of erecting a cathedral there. After hearing about their plans, Emperor Diego López de Santa Anna ordered Governor Manuel Micheltorena to stop their construction because he felt that such an important project would detract from Mexico's role as a colonial power in California. In 1829 Pedro Ruiz y Pacheco became governor of Alta California and began efforts to revive Mission San Carlos as an educational institution. He also began construction on what would become Rancho Bernardo (later Rancho Santa Fe). The first settlers arrived at Rancho Bernardo in March 1830 and soon started building themselves a small community around their little ranch house called Los Olivos (the Olive Orchard). Soon enough, other pioneers joined them and within two years there were more than 100 residents living among the trees near Yerba Buena Creek. Playing an important role in early history were Antonio Vallejo, author of "The American West," who homesteaded along Yerba Buena Creek; José Vasconcelos, who founded Redding; Jameson Wright who built Winton House; Revésperio Almonte who helped found Angels Camp; Fernando Ortizwho donated land for Adobe Walls; Andrés Anchieta whose family owned much land near present-day Fillmore Street between Third and Fourth Streets; John Sutter discovered gold near Sacramento during his trip up Mono Lake in1848and starting mining operations at Sutter's Mill which became known as Gold Hill today (). Rancho Bernardo slowly but surely lost its importance as an agricultural center due to falling commodity prices and competition from larger ranches farther downriver. However, it continued to be used for housing and military purposes until 1862 when it was renamed Rancho Seco after General José Seco Romero who commanded forces against Ulysses S Grant during the Mexican-American War (1846-1847). From then on it served primarily as a cattle concentration camp until 1924 when it was finally sold off to developers for $325 million dollars (). Today part of Mountain View National Recreation Area is located inside ranch boundaries while another section including some original buildings still stands within town limits
