San Carlos is a small city in the Central Valley of California, located about 60 miles (100 km) east of Sacramento. The population was 4,814 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit San Carlos were Jesuit missionaries who came in 1769. They named it San Marcos because Mission Santa María had been founded nearby some years earlier. Spanish Captains Don Manuel Nieto and Diego Rivera led expeditions into this area in 1821 and 1823, respectively, but found no gold or other natural resources hereabouts. In 1849–50 American parties mining for silver in the area discovered strikes that allowed California to become a U.S. territory; San Carlos became part of Fresno County on January 26, 1850. In 1859–60 Mexican landowner Sephardic Jews from Puebla arrived in San Carlos and founded an agricultural community called Esperanza de la Costa (Esperanza of the Coast). This community prospered until 1862 when violence erupted between Mexican settlers and Anglo farmers over grazing rights. A group of English-speaking Americans built a log cabin near Esperanza de la Costa around 1865; they called it "Mendoza." From there the name spread to include all of San Carlos County as well as parts of Tulare and Kern Counties within Californian statehood in 1850. In 1870Californians passed a bill creating Stanislaus County based on recommendations by Govs Hiram Johnson and John Cranch; San Carlos became one of its original counties under this new jurisdiction system. Growth in downtown San Carlos began during this time with building projects such as the old City Hall buildings completed during 1875–76 under Mayor José Francisco Sanchez y Valdés after his election asController General for California’s central district (). At this time most business activity took place along 5th Street between Market Street and Guerrero Street which was then known as “the Main thoroughfare” because it carried most goods from town to town throughout Fresno County west to northward through Danville, North Paramount, Visalia etc., bypassing smaller towns nearer the center like Saugus etc., thus giving Sierra Nevada foothills their center stage again instead of close by cities like Fresno or Stockton deep inside Southern Californian mountain ranges like Menlo Park etc.). On October 3rd 1886 George Wickersham sold lot 812 on what is now Alameda Avenue just southwest side of 5th street between Guerrero Street & Market Streets to Lorenzo Aspiazu who already owned large tract adjoining present day Santana Row ( bounded at NE corner by 1st St & 2nd Ave BART Station property lines), he also conveyed right-of-way across alley separating his lot from adjacent lots lying east & west side thereof containing same number acres LL including improvements thereto extending northerly 2 rods towards current day Hoover Rd (now Oakland Blvd)
