The San Carlos National Guard has been a part of the California community for over 120 years. The organization is perpetuating its presence by providing military support to local law enforcement and emergency services. This important role in the state’s history can be traced back to 1887, when the first national guard unit was organized in San Carlos County. At that time, there were only a few hundred soldiers garrisoned in San Carlos County. However, with the outbreak of World War I, the military involvement increased significantly. In 1916, Congress passed an act giving full funding to the national guard and creating a standing force of 10,000 men nationwide. Since then, the San Carlos National Guard has participated in many wars and peacekeeping missions around the world. In 2016-2017, they served as one of two units deployed to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria destroyed much of that island. Additionally, they have been deployed to missions throughout Southern California multiple times since then; most notably during Operation Choke Point which aimed to reduce gun trafficking on Long Beach Boulevard. Despite these deployments and many years of tradition within this organization, it is hard not to notice how different things are today than when national guard members first joined forces 100+ years ago. For one thing, there are now 2 separate branches within the San Carlos National Guard: Infantry and Cavalry/Airborne Units! Additionally, technology has played an important role inilitary life here – from satellite imagery capabilities for tracking troop movements to video conferencing for commanders communicating with their troops overseas.

In 1916, the San Carlos National Guard was organized as a volunteer force. The armory and post office were both established in 1916. The first unit to be raised by the San Carlos National Guard was Company K of the 9th Infantry Regiment on July 1, 1916. The regiment served in World War I and was disbanded in 1919. The 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment was organized on November 17, 1917 and served during World War II as part of Army Forces Pacific theater. The battalion was disbanded on September 30, 1945. On October 3, 1951, the 2nd Battalion, California Infantry Regiment (now known as the 49th Infantry Brigade) was activated at Fort Tejon and assigned to duty with United States Seventh Fleet Mediterranean Theater of Operations during Operation "Rapid Recovery". The battalion served until its activation in 1957 as part of United States Fourth Marine Division which became elements of Ninth Marine Expeditionary Force upon its departure from Vietnam in 1975. The 49th brigadeactivated again on December 15, 1987 at Camp Pendleton Naval Air Station when it became element of First Marine Division/ Tenth Marine Expeditionary Force which became active for Desert Storm following Gulf War I hostilities against Iraq

In 1812, the 1st Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment was organized from members of Companies A and B of the 3rd Delaware Infantry Regiment. In 1814, the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment was organized from men from companies E and F of the 2nd Middlesex County Regiment. In 1818, Company G of the 4th Connecticut Infantry Regiment (now called Company D of the 116th NY State Militia) was raised from men from company C of the 5th Connecticut Infantry Regiment. Since then, every state has had its own National Guard unit (or at least each one has organization that reflects that state’s history).
In 1821, San Carlos was founded as the first settlement in what is today known as California. The town was named after General Valeriano Gomez, who fought against Mexican forces at the Battle of San Carlos in 1817. At its peak in 1851, San Carlos had a population of 1,500 people and was home to a mission and school. In 1865, the town voted to become an incorporated city and it has since grown into one of the most populous cities in California. The economy of San Carlos is based on its service sector, with a strong focus on government and education services. Major employers include Southern Pacific Railroad, Kaiser Permanentehealth Care System, and Imperial County College. The city also features several museums including the Valley Historical Museum and the Regency House Museum.
