The San Carlos Navy Deployed Gift History Museum is a nonprofit organization that has been collecting and preserving military artifacts since 1978. The museum is located at the Naval Air Station, Moffett Field in San Carlos, California. The museum was founded by Rear Admiral Don L. Hays in 1978 as the San Carlos Naval Air Station Historical Society to preserve and display naval aviation memorabilia from the original Naval Air Station, Moffett Field in San Carlos, California. In 1984, the museum moved to its current location and began exhibiting navy aircraft and weapons donated by various members of the military community throughout Southern California. Over time, the museum has collected many noteworthy gifts from various branches of service including submarines (1951-1986), air defense artillery batteries (1973-1985), amphibious assault ships (1989-1998), and more. These items have become an important part of naval history as they provide insight into how these vessels functioned during specific periods in both our military’s past and present. Today, the San Carlos Navy Deployed Gift History Museum oversees a library of over 1,000 items which include vintage radios, missiles, cannons, clothing and accessories donated by members of the military community across Northern California as well as Nevada and Arizona. This valuable collection offers visitors an intimate look at what it means when a member of our armed forces presents their loved ones with a special gift.

San Carlos is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 7,816 at the 2010 census. It is served by the San Carlos Unified School District. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Contra Costa County were Spanish fishermen who set up camp on the shore of Point Reyes National Seashore in 1823. The area that would become San Carlos was part of Rancho Rinconada, given to José Asís Castro in 1836 by his brother-in-law Manuel Nieto. In 1851, San Carlos became an incorporated settlement when Colonel Edward Payson Foster named it after himself and his family. In 1872, John Sutter built the first mill on the west side of present day Menlo Park Boulevard and named it after his father-in-law, Don Miguel de Alvarado y Pavón (El Alcalde). By 1876, there were 8 businesses with a total payroll of $10,000: 4 sawmills (1 for lumber and 3 for flour), 2 breweries (Eagle Rock and North Beach), 1 hotel/motel (the Excelsior), 1 cooperative grocery store/laboratory (Foster's Agricultural Emporium) and 1 bakery/butterfly farm (Calvary Chapel). On November 6th1887 voters approved incorporation of Contra Costa County as a village under the name "San Carlos". The original plat included land south of today's Orinda Avenue including much of present day San Carlos Elementary School buildings as well as most if not all of today's Woods Middle School buildings. On May 10th 1888 Santa Clara Valley Railroad began passenger service from Oakland to Menlo Park with stops at East Palo Alto and San Jose; this led to increased development along Alamitos Avenue which became known as "The Avenue" or simply "Avenue" starting about 1890 due to this rail service connection plus growth in nearby Pleasanton thanks largely to General Electric Company founder George Westinghouse who built some new homes near their plant site east of Pioneer Street between First Street and Carbondale Avenue circa 1915-1920. With annexation by Berkeley in 1906 following its purchase by Stanford University through eminent domain proceedings initiated by then Mayor George Hearst, much former Coyote Valley mining areas lay within Contra Costa County limits resulting in heavy industrial development throughout much of this period including major operations at nearby Rheem Manufacturing Company’s Arroyo Seco mine beginning 1925 until 1984 when it closed because OFR abandoned plans for large open pit mining effluent discharge into Saratoga Creek which would have created serious environmental problems had those plans been successful
