The San Carlos Naval Ammunition Depot, located in the city of San Carlos, California was founded in 1881. It became a naval ammunition depot after the United States Navy purchased land for it on December 15, 1881. The first buildings were erected at the site in 1882 and during its first few years of operation it served as an armory and storehouse. In 1886 it became a branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad and was used to ship ammunition to Marine Corps forces fighting in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In 1916 it became part of the newly created United States Navy Redevelopment Command and remained so until 1949 when it was closed by order of Secretary of Defense James Forrestal. In 1905, an oil well was drilled near present-day Roscoe and Park streets by Texaco Petroleum Company; this well gave rise to the town's initial development as a drilling community with many businesses and homes built around it. By 1912, most of what are now downtownSan Carlos had been erected with brick or concrete walls for protection from dust storms that swept through southern California during those years of great drought. In 1913–1914, Japanese Americans were rounded up and incarcerated at Singleton Nojo General Hospital during World War II; as a result of that incarceration many people who would have otherwise resided in downtownSan Carlos moved into housing developments nearby instead. On October 15, 1957 - more than 50 years after its incorporation as a city - SanCarlos voters passed an ordinance ratifyinghood status within Los Angeles County while rejecting annexation by any other city or county within that jurisdiction

In 1821, the first permanent Spanish settlement in California was established at San Carlos Mission on an eminence overlooking the Sacramento River. The mission was founded by Father José Altamirano and his friars, and it soon became one of the most important religious missions in Alta California. In 1834, Mexico ceded California to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, and San Carlos Mission reverted to Mexican control. However, because American forces had fought in Mexico during its war for independence from Spain, many Mexicans living in California regarded American authorities as illegitimate and saw U.S. rule as illegitimate too. This situation deteriorated when General Antonio López de Santa Anna came to power in 1847 and began implementing a pro-Mexican policy. Santa Anna ordered all Spanish homes be burned down, including those belonging to American citizens. Fearing for their safety, many Americans left California for other parts of America early in1848. The mission buildings were not destroyed but they were abandoned until 1851 when they were reoccupied by Father Miguel Borrega y Costantini who started a school there which lasted until 1861 when it was closed due to financial problems caused by gold fever unrestrained throughout much of southern North America at that time (see also: History Of San Carlos). In 1863–64 a new church was built on top of the original mission structure; this new church became known as Nuestra Señora de los Angeles Cathedral afterSAN CARLOS MISSION NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LOS ANGELES DIVISIONAL CHURCH). On July 16th, 1912 five ranchers led by Harry Anslinger shot into San Carlos Mission Church with revolvers while services were being celebrated inside; this event is often cited as the beginning of prohibition in California (see also: Prohibition In The United States Of America). After another shooting incident took place at La Honda Ranch several weeks later (on October 2nd), lawlessness continued across the state culminating with an infamous shootout between Ulysses S Grant's army under General John Custer and marauding Apaches near San Diego on November 7th which resulted in over 100 dead including 10 Californians ( see also: The Great Tucson War ). At about this time some 8500 Mexican immigrants who had been living unlawfully within Arizona proper began flowing into southern California seeking refuge from violence there while others continued eastward through Nevada into what is now Oregon Territory before finally reaching what is now Sonoma County about 1840 AD . These various waves of immigration have greatly affected both local demographics and cultural patterns withinSan Carlos County since then making it one of most highly diverse places where social Cohesion has kept pace with changing economic conditions Nowadays nearly all children attending public schools attend traditional school year round though students can choose Alternative Learning Programs offered through different private organizations such as Home Schooling or Charter Schools if they wish There are currently no high school or college level programs available anywhere withinSan Carlos County limits but efforts are underway to change that The Missions And Their Legacy
In 1847, the California Gold Rush began in San Carlos and soon there was a large population of prospectors on the area. By 1850, the town had a population of around 50 people and was founded by Captain John Sutter. The first post office was established in 1851, and by 1861, San Carlos had a school and jail. In 1865, San Carlos became part of Yolo County. In 1876, it became part of Sacramento County.
