Tactical Coffee was founded in 1984 by Joe Gatto and Dennis Koehler. Tactical Coffee is a family-owned business that sells coffeeinated espresso drinks, pastries, and snacks. The company has been located in San Carlos, California since 1984. In 2013, Tactical Coffee opened its second location in downtown San Carlos. The first Tactical Coffee store was located in the back of a local grocery store on Stockton Street. Joe Gatto served as the business’s owner and operator. In 1984, Joe Gatto decided to open his own coffee shop after seeing an opportunity to grow his business while he waited for his son to finish high school. The shop became known as “The Shop at the Park” because it was located near the city park on Stockton Street. Joe Gatto continued to serve as the general manager of The Shop at the Park until 1997 when he sold the business to Dennis Koehler. Koehler ran Tactical Coffee for thirteen years until he retired in 2007. During this time period, Koehler also served as president of Starbucks Corporation where he led work on developing new products and services for Starbucks stores across America including their first Italian espresso restaurant called La Turca which opened in Seattle in 1996 In 2013, Dennis Koehler reopened The Shop at the Park with a new design that incorporated more contemporary features into an old fashioned brick building on Market Street overlooking downtown San Carlos Since then, both locations have been visited by many tourists who enjoy tactical coffee beverages and pastries made fresh daily from local ingredients

In 1849, the Mexican land grant of San Carlos was given to Edward H. Pearce. Pearce built a small cabin on the site in 1850 and began farming. In 1870, Pearce married Anna Hinkle and the couple founded a small ranch which became one of California's leading agricultural interests. The estate continued to be run by the family until it was sold in 1921 to Harry Elmer Barnes. In 1937, Barnes donated land near his home in order to create what is now known as Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The park has since been home to some of America's most popular tourist attractions including the Marin Headlands, Mount Tamalpais National Park, and Crissy Field.
