It is part of the larger port town of Imperial Beach. The first people to live in what is now San Clemente were Coast Miwok Indians who hunted and gathered wild plants and fruits near the mouth of the San Dieguito River. In 1821, Juan Bautista de Anza discovered and named this area San Clemente after St. Clementius, one of his many martyrdoms on Long Island in New York City. This site became part of Rancho Santa Fe de Nuestra Señora del Rosario which was divided into portions by Felipe Carrillo y Mendez in 1850 as part of land grants given to various Spanish families that had settled along the coast during their time as mission administrators. In 1851–1852, Los Angeles Californian staked claim to much of southern Orange County including what is now San Clemente when Captain George Parker led a party across the desert from Los Angeles overland through present-day Riverside County for mineral discoveries westward. He named his discovery Point Conception because he sighted a point on an iceberg about spit out by a fast current while exploring for oil wells east of Point Loma (present day El Cajon). A later owner, Nicholas Doheny Sr., renamed it Point Conception after getting word from Captain Parker that another British exploration team had also reached that point two weeks earlier on July 17th,. Consequently, both parties got credit for discovery although only Doheny actually made landfall on shore at Point Conception . At first there were few people living here because Missionaries kept arriving fresh water stocks from Mission Bay just upriver while they built new missions farther inland at Solano Heights (modern-day Foster City) and Carpinteria (present day Marina Del Rey). By 1881 when James Wolk arrived with his family from Illinois via steamer "Cimarron" he saw an opportunity to build a large colony opposite Solano Headlands where he could control shipping traffic between Alameda Valley and points north so more crops could be grown without being watered or harvested by birds or other animals which could spoil food supplies sent downriver for Missions residents back home. Wolk founded Sanclemente Colony Incorporated in April 1882 with himself as its first president/founder; others soon followed until today there are over 1,000+ citizens living here inclusive OF shorts - most locals dress informally/un formally outside their homes most days! It wasn't long before problems arose due to lack of labor & other factors surrounding this developing community: In September 1886 Padres José Joaquín Urrutia & Manuel Bonilla established Río Piedrasito Presidio del Norte with 8 hundred men under Bonilla command to protect shipping lanes leading into Encinitas Harbor but due to challenges encountered such as difficult terrain & harsh weather conditions they abandoned their outpost less than 2 months later following reports that bandits were terrorizing coastal villages rich sources of usable goods like seafood etc... instead Urdialde ordered them recalled effective November 15th 1886 following local outcry accusing him & Bonillaof dereliction Of duty! This event created political tension& division among our fledgling community as well as pitting English-speaking merchants against Spanish speaking farmers (& landlords) over access to resources essential for both groups! harboring no illusions about their intentions or power ;) today's populace reflects this longstanding rivalry with relative ease :) even though violence still occurs occasionally :( Missionaries started arriving in significant numbers early 20th century looking to automate agriculture work done previously by Native Americans who assist these missionaries thru translation services....... however due To economic constraints unique challenges began arising immediately......... colonial life style eventually caused rapid growth rate compared too traditional Mexican model where people rotated crops 3 times per year..... rapidly housing development resulted creating intense heat waves making it difficultazonable year round...... extensive repair jobs needed once infrastructure was inadequate resulting in high rates for services......... numerous floods throughout decade virtually wiping out neighborhoods leaving little choice but demolition/new construction....... finally during WW2 military relocation forced many residents back onto streets within city limits ......many original buildings remain standing testamentto pioneers' determined spirit

The site remains one of Hollywood's most popular filming locations with scenes including parts of "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (1940), "A Place In Time" (2005), and "Lincoln" (2012). After World War II began, industry shifted from agriculture to manufacturing and development accelerated during postwar years; this led to increased pollution which caused numerous health problems among locals and tourists alike. This culminated with Expo '64 which showcased many innovative new technologies including air conditioning that would soon become ubiquitous throughout North America. By 1970s environmentalism had gained significant ground within American society; however progress stalled during right-wing administrations under Reagan and Thatcher respectively culminating in economic sanctions against Cuba following their rise to power there beginning in 1991. This led to improved relations between America and Cuba starting under Obama but no real change thereafter regarding human rights abuses there continuing unabated despite recent US overtures towards reformulations such as the Cuban Liberty Act designed to bring some measure of accountability into that process
In 1853, the first permanent white settlement in San Clemente was founded by John C. Frémont and his party of men on the present site of Harbor City. The town was named for Saint Clementinus, a Roman Catholic missionary who had visited the area in 1824. In 1860, when San Clemente became part of California, it was renamed for General Don Carlos Antonio de la Torre y Ortega y Gasset, governor of California during the Mexican Period.
