The Coast Guard has been in San Clemente since 1879. The first Coast Guard station was built on the current site of the Pierogi Park in 1887. The station moved to its present location on Point Loma in 1923. In 1934, the Coast Guard had its first helicopter squadron and began using helicopters for search and rescue missions. In 1939, the first destroyer escort was built in San Clemente. The Coast Guard acquired its own cutter, PC-9, in 1941. In 1949, a destroyer escort was transferred from the Navy to become part of the Coast Guard fleet. A patrol boat, EP-3A, was added to the fleet in 1952 and a tugboat, TP-5C, followed suit in 1956. In 1961, a helicopter unit was established and it has used helicopters ever since. In 1970s and 1980s there were large budget cuts by then Governor Ronald Reagan which led to reductions within both law enforcement agencies as well as withthe California State Legislature throughout California resulting in an overall decline of funding for the state's various agencies includingthe County Sheriff's Department which became primarily responsible for local law enforcement activities within their respective county boundaries instead of having an centralized command center located inside of San Clemente where they could be better coordinated with other state agencies

The Coast Guard Station in San Clemente, California first opened its doors on December 1, 1892. The history of San Clemente, California is rich and full of both the good and bad aspects that make up life on a large, diverse peninsula. The first people to live here were the Ohlone Indians who arrived in droves during the late 18th century. They began cultivating maize, beans, and other crops, then built small villages near what is now downtown San Clemente. In 1795-97, a group of Spanish soldiers under Don José de Portocarrero traveled through this area and discovered an entire bayous (rivers) system connecting southern California with Yucatan Peninsula. This discovery led to increased interest in the area by Spain's friends and competitors as well as new investments from entrepreneurs throughout North America. In 1821, when Mexico gained independence from Spain, it became its own country with its own government and economy. As part of Mexican territory, San Clemente belonged to Baja California Province. However, because there was no road or treaty connection between Mexico City and Baja California Province beyond Yaqui Creek (the provincial border), much business took place at Tijuana until 1830 when a road was built linking Tijuana with Mexicali Municipality along the coast. During this time period growth rates for various businesses in San Clemente were quite slow due to lack of transportation links outside of Baja California Province; however new developments such as irrigation systems along the Rinconada River quickly started causing these rates to increase dramatically over time. By 1850 there were over 100 businesses operating in downtownSan Clemente employing more than 500 employees! On October 10th 1860 Major John Cohan commanding 1st Battalion 12th Infantry Regiment attacked Castilla Californiana while stationed at Santa Ysabel Naval Station located on Long Beach Harbor south of present day Big Sur County line which resulted in heavy loss for our unit including one officer killed & six wounded including myself Capt’n John Cohan A&S

The Mission Santa Clara was founded in 1769 by Father Junípero Serra and it became an annual event that attracted thousands of people. In 1821, San Clemente Island was divided between Mexico and California as part of the Mexican-American War. In 1853, San Clemente became a city when its citizens voted to incorporation. The city's first mayor was José Gomez de la Cruz.
