San Clemente is a town in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 21,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Carlsbad metropolitan area. The name for San Clemente comes from Mission Santa Clara de Asís and Mission San Luis Rey de Francia. In 1821, Captain José María Narváez discovered Monterey Peninsula and named it after Saint Clement of Rome who had died in 1776 while on a missionary journey to Mexico City. The first European to visit the peninsula was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo in 1542, but he did not find any traces of human habitation or tradeable land. On November 22, 1821, Father Junípero Serra founded the Mission Santa Cruz de la Merced on Promontory Point in what is now known as downtown San Clemente. On July 14, 1825, Father Sebastián Vizcaino assumed control of the mission from Father Serra and began construction of a new church which would become one of Southern California's most popular tourist attractions. In 1848–49 Ulysses S. Grant traveled through southern California and stopped at Atascadero Creek where he bathed before continuing his journey to Yuma Desert National Monument northwest of Tucson. This event helped spur development around Atascadero Creek as ranching became more prevalent in that region during this time period; Many stores and businesses were built along Atascadero Creek Boulevard between 1863 and 1868 when this section was widened by then-Governor Pio Pico following surveys made by Edward Hitezon with assistance from General Antonio López de Santa Anna’s office during his administration (1846-1851). A few years later another road was built parallel to Atascadero Creek Boulevard which became known as State Route 78 (later Interstate 5) due to its proximity to major economic hubs such as Los Angeles County and neighboring inland counties like Orange County until it was realigned within Southern California by Ronald Reagan in 1984 following his re-election as president that year; Today much remains unchanged from those days including portions of State Route 78 running adjacent to both sides of Cal Coast Highway near Laguna Beach & Carlsbad Caverns & just south past Seal Beach onto Pacific Coast Highway near Dana Point before terminating at US 101 Alternate route 1 about midway between Irvine & Huntington Beach An early post office called "Atascaderos" opened on October 26th 1870 under the name "Los Angeles". It continued operation under that name until it merged with "San Francisco" on January 1st 1893 becoming part of the newly formed Golden Gate Bridge District pursuant to an act entitled An Act To Establish Districts across Northern Californias Passed by Congress at Washington D C On April 6th 1890 (). In 1846, when California became a state, San Clemente was incorporated as a town. In 1911, the town of San Clemente established its own school system which continued until 1976. In 1923, the town also erected a park in honor of Commodore John Tingley who had helped bring about Californias incorporation as a state. The community has experienced many changes over the years including growing subdivisions and professional sports teams playing in various stadiums throughout the years.
