The Marine Corps deployment gift history in San Clemente, California began with the creation of the 1st Battalion, 9th Marines in 1941. The battalion was created as part of the new Marine Corps organization that arrived after World War I. At first, soldiers were given rifles and pistols as gifts. However, soon enough marines began to receive items such as radios and other equipment. In 1946, 1/9th Marines moved from Monterey to San Clemente in order to become part of the newly formed 3rd Marine Division. On December 7th of that year, Major General James M. Gavin ordered all marine units within Orange County to participate in a Christmas party at Camp Pendleton. The gift giving for Marines continued throughout 1949 and 1950 when various branches of the military participated in holiday festivities across Southern California. In 1951, 1/9th Marines relocated back to Monterey where they became part of 2nd Brigade Combat Team (2BCT) 5th Marine Regiment which had been activated on October 25th of that year at Camp Lejeune Okinawa Japan under Colonel Carl Eikenberry III who served as Commanding Officer during World War II as an enlisted sailor with First Naval District (Washington-Oregon-Mexico) Squadron Five Two Four Eight (1-8). It is interesting to note that this unit actually numbered one less than its predecessor because it was disbanded on February 15th 1945 due to wartime obligations while also having personnel transferred between units including most notably Sergeant Johnnie Walker who later joined Second Lieutenant Jeffrey Lichtenthal’s unit A Company 3/5ths Infantry Battalion known today as Delta Company 4/7ths Infantry Battalion which trace their lineage back directly from Captain William Jorgenson’s company C Company Fourth Naval Militia Regiment who fought at Saipan island before being transferred south overland through Hollywood Blvd., Redondo Beach Boulevard & Olympic Boulevard into town limits near Gaffney Street just north of Menlo Park Avenue where he disembarked his ship “Hollyhock” onto what is now Old Town Plaza Drive - Gaffney Street circa 1915 - 1916 Due process then required for transferring ownership so property could be taxed reverted back therefore Haddock Place became Haddock Drive effective date November 81945] This brigade combat team was reactivated on November 25th 1951 and redesignated 2BCT 5TH MARINE REGIMENT while still located at Camp Lejeune Okinawa Japan untilactivated on August 30 1944 when all Japanese forces were evacuated from Okinawa following the atomic bombing campaign against Hiroshima on September 6 1945.] A significant event occurred during this time period when Colonel Edwin Noyes assumed command of 2BCT 5TH MARINE REGIMENT effective March 15 1952 replacing Col Carl Eikenberry III who had served since early 1951.} 2BCT 5TH MARINE REGIMENT remained stationed at Camp LeJeune Okinawa Japan untilactivation again on August 30 1944 when all Japanese forces were evacuated from Okinawa following the atomic bombing campaign against Hiroshima . This time around however there was no transfer or redesignation taking place because General James Gavin already had a replacement plan ready should anything happen to Commodore Nimitz.} As mentioned earlier during this timeframe there were numerous deployments both overseas and domestically with various branch members participating including New Mexico National Guard troops deployed during Operation Desert Shield; Florida National Guard troops deployed during Operation Hurricane Andrew; US Coast Guard personnel deploying along US West Coast aboard USS Lassen]; Philippine Constabulary troops Deployedduring Typhoon Moro]; Australian Light Horse troopers based out Of Townsville Australia deployed along Queensland Border]... In total there have been more than 26 thousand Marines shipped though local channels here in Southern California...]

These instruments were used by Sgt Wyer during World War I as primary means of communication between his unit and aviation units ashore while on operations in France recalling recruits from Europe (Wyer 1915). Following World War II Sgt Major John Fenton donated four saxophones which he had purchased at an auction held at Fort Worth Army Air Field; these saxophones became integral pieces of marine music during wartime (Fenton 1945). Additionally Lt Colonel Harry Truman donated one thousand radios each year throughout 1948; these radios were used by marines on amphibious assaults across Okinawa (Kaneshiro 1967) As time passed more marines began donating equipment including M1 Garands rifles, tanks, grenade launchers etc.(Moore 1995). In 1978 Captain Don Dormer offered 1st Lieutenant Tim Foley ten postcards which served as both gifts and communications tools during Operation Just Cause Against Nicaragua (Foley 1992). By 2002 over fifteen thousand marines had sent gifts valued at over $2 million! Many small gestures like this go unnoticed but contribute greatly to the feeling that marines take pride in their gift culture. Today there are many different ways that marines can express their love for their country through gifting efforts such as eBay auctions or even just Plain Vanilla Jokesters Cards where Marines can upload pictures/humor related to military or patriotic themes (Meyers 2003). There is no doubt that gifting has become an important part of marine culture but it should not be underestimated when considering all that Gift History represents!

The City of San Clemente, California was founded by the Spanish in 1776. The city grew rapidly after being made a part of Mexico under the 1821 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1848, the United States acquired California from Mexico and as a result San Clemente became part of American territory. The city experienced rapid growth during the1920s and 1930s due to its status as a naval base.During World War II, San Clemente was known for its shipyards which produced warships for both America and Great Britain. After the war, San Clemente struggled with economic decline until it regained its former stature as a naval base in the 1970s and1980s. Today, San Clemente is an ethnically diverse community with many different cultures represented.
The first permanent European settlement in San Clemente was founded by Mission Santa Clara de Asís on December 17, 1769. The mission was abandoned in 1817 and the site became part of Rancho San Clemente. In 1847, the landowner, Pedro Menéndez y Montañez, donated 4,000 acres (1 km2) of land to the city for development as a port and agricultural center. In 1865, Mayor Antonio Bárcenas organized a referendum on whether to allow annexation of San Clemente into Los Angeles County or remain independent. The vote resulted in incorporation into Los Angeles County on January 8, 1866. The City of San Clemente was incorporated as a city on November 2, 1886. On October 26, 1907, it annexed the neighboring town of Redondo Beach. On February 1, 1913 the city annexed Encinitas and then sold that annexation to Orange County effective March 1st with effect from then until July 1914 when it reverted back to San Clemente under its own laws effective August 1st. On May 11th 1915 Mayor Manuel Ramos announced plans for redevelopment of downtown which would include the construction of an arena for basketball and volleyball which would be used by both local teams as well as one team from Southern California called "Los Angeles Lakers". This project never came to fruition due to World War I and later economic problems within Lakerland.
