The San Clemente Naval Station is home to the Pacific Fleet's only Aircraft Carrier, USS Enterprise. The station also houses the United States Navy's Engineering and Research Center (EARC) which was built in 1961 as part of Commander Ernest J. King's effort to modernize the navy. EARC has a wide variety of research and engineering projects that support naval operations around the world. Since its inception, EARC has been responsible for developing innovative concepts and technologies that have helped make Navy warships more effective. In recent years, EARC has played an important role in developing new types of warfare platforms including Aegis destroyers and Harpoon missiles. Some of the most significant advances made at EARC have had a direct impact on US military engagements around the world: from improving survivability on carrier-based ships to helping develop new methods for air defense against cruise missiles. EARC is one of many institutions within the United States Navy that are essential for our warfighting capability. The facility providesahlity services such as computer labs, laboratories specialising in missile development and testing, aircraft hangars capable accommodating Nimitz-class carriers,and shipyards where vessels are fabricated using state-of-the art technology. San Clemente is a city in San Diego County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 64,551. It is the second most populous city in San Diego County and the most populous municipality within Orange County. The City of San Clemente borders Coronado to the north and east; Mission Viejo to the south and west; Laguna Niguel to the northwest; and La Jolla to the southwest. Prior to Mexico's invasion of California in 1846, Cahuilla Indians lived on an area that now includes downtown San Clemente. In 1847, Lt. Governor Manuel Micheltorena erected a small adobe mission here for members of his Mexican military unit commanded by Juan Bautista Alvarado who had fought against American forces at Palo Alto Ridge during Adobe Campaign #2 on October 8th, 1846. After Mexican withdrawal from California in 1848, no more missions were established in this area except for Rancho Santa Ana which was given by Spain as part of Rancho del Rey de la tierra adobada al pueblo de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (now known as Mission Valley). In 1860, following annexation of Imperial Valley by Southern Californians through Proposition I (1860), some settlers began moving into what is today downtown San Clemente from their farms near Agua Dulce reservoir because there was no water available nearby for irrigation or farming. The name "San Clemente" was chosen because it resembled the title page of an old book with a devotion to St. Clement (a 4th century martyr). In 1906, San Clemente became part of the United States and lost its status as a village. However, it has continued to be a popular tourist spot for visitors since then.
