The USAF has a rich history of giving gifts. Gifts have been given to the USAF since it was founded in 1947. The first gift from the USAF was a beaver hat. This gift was made in memory of Colonel James W. “Jimmy” Doolittle, who died in an airplane crash while flying for the squadron he commanded, the China-Burma-India Theater Air Forces (CBIAF). Colonel Doolittle's hat was donated by General Electric Company and is still used today by the USAF as part of its display at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. In 1954, the USAF provided a Boeing 707 jetliner to EgyptAir Industries Ltd., which became one ofaircraft manufacturer's most successful customer until its bankruptcy in 2001. The Boeing 727 had been designed jointly by American Airlines and United Airlines engineers working out of Rice University's School of Engineering and Applied Science. In addition to being flown by Egyptian air force pilots as their personal aircraft, this new type also served as an advertising platform for American Airlines during those years when airline travel was often seen as a symbol of national prestige abroad Aircraft gifts are not limited to just planes or jets; the USAF has also given donations such as helicopters and drones. In 1992, Mayor Jerry Sanders announced that he would seek reelection but lost to incumbent Rudy Giuliani. Since then,San Diegans have seen several mayors who have been unable or unwilling to address problems within their city government or increase employment opportunities for locals. On November 8th, 2016, Mayor Kevin Faulconer won his fourth term with 54% against Antonio Villaraigosa's 42%. This marks an official end to San DIEGO’S long history as an open-air shopping center full of street fairs and carnivals
The first Europeans to visit San Diego were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his expedition in 1542. The area was explored by Vasco Núñez de Balboa in 1581, who named it La Jolla because of the abundance of shells he found at the beach. In 1769, Captain Alvarado led an expedition that discovered the bay and its islands. On July 4, 1821, Mexican revolutionary General José María Morelos declared San Diego a part of Mexico as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. After California gained statehood in 1850, San Diego became one of its original six cities.
