The United States Army has been present in San Diego since 1846. The first military presence here was in the Mexican-American War, when American forces fought under General Antonio López de Santa Anna. From then until World War II, the US Marines served as an auxiliary force to the army. In 1942, the US Army Combat Arms Command was created and San Diego became its headquarters. The command grew to include all branches of the military as well as civilian support services. In 1945, San Diego became a major airbase for the Allies during World War II and later served as a training ground for new troops and officers. Since 1954, SAN DIEGO HAS BEEN HOME TO THE ARMY POLICE SERVICES OF CALIFORNIA (APS).formerly stationed at Fort Lewis Barracks before moving to their current location on Doña Ana Street in 1944. APS is one of three uniformed police services located within California's borders; others are LAPD and sheriff's departments. With more than 6,000 sworn officers and 350 civilians who provide administrative support, APS is one of California's most extensive law enforcement agencies.

In 1853, Commodore John Cushing named San Diego “the most important port on the California coast” because it had become a convenient staging area for US military campaigns against Mexico and its proxies. In 1876, President Ulysses S Grant issued the Executive Order 10408 which authorized the construction of an army post in San Diego County. The post was named Fort Stanton after General James O’Donnell Stanton who commanded US forces at Rialto Bridge that day. Construction began on October 15th, 1880 and finished two years later on July 4th, 1882 by 700 men under command of Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Poekemanserger (USMC). On October 3rd 1886 Commodore John Cushing renamed Fort Stanton Naval Station after Rear Admiral George Fiske Burlingame (USN) commander of USS Constitution squadron off Mexico City during those years of war with Mexico
