Since the early 1800s, Coast Guard gift history in San Diego has been intertwined with maritime tradition. The San Diego City and County Parks Department’s Maritime Museum offers a glimpse into this history by exhibiting artifacts from both the historical and contemporary Coast Guard. The first Coast Guard Station was established in 1847 on Point Loma, which is now part of downtown San Diego. Today, there are six Coast Guard stations located throughout the city and county: Alameda-Fremont; Balboa Park-East Bay; Bonnie Doon-San Marcos; Carlsbad Caverns-Clovis ; Del Mar Heights-Del Mar ; and Mission Valley-Alpine . Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has provided law enforcement and support for industries such as fishing, seaport security, marine environmental monitoring, search and rescue missions, public safety events such as parades or fireworks shows, and more. In recent years, they have also become involved in social justice issues through their work with Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP), providing education and resources to police officers about how to make intelligent decisions while enforcing prohibition laws. Today’s Coast Guard gift history begins with John Wesley Powell who served as captain of the USS Constitution during his expedition up the Colorado River in 1869. He brought back plants samples that he named “Wesleya cynthiae” after his mentor – plant explorer James Wesley Harrington (1797–1875). This naming was an innovation because at that time there were no scientific names for plants. In 1934–35 grants were issued to various individuals for donations of surplus military equipment from World War II veterans. These grants allowed civilians to purchase items such as trucks, boat anchors, moorings systems, lifejackets/snorkel gear/ flares/torches etc., which could be used by local authorities for law enforcement or emergency purposes only. This period is known as “Gift Shop Period” because most gifts were bought from people who knew someone who had something valuable that needed new use or repair. During this time period many businesses closed down because of lack of customers or competition from other stores run by government officials or civilian entrepreneurs. However some businesses did survive including The Kiple Foundation which donated a machine shop complete with tools used by Los Angeles Police Department detectives during their inquiries into organized crime activities

The name "San Diego" comes from Mission San Diego de Alcalá, which was founded in 1769 by Franciscan missionaries under orders from Pope Clement XIV. The mission became a U.S. military post after Mexican independence in 1821, and then again after Mexican American War (1846-48). In 1692 colonial settlers on what would become downtown San Diego named it Rancho del Norte because of its location near Nob Hill canyon on the north side of Point Loma—now Downtown San Diego—and because there were no other settlements within sight or reach of Los Angeles County (). The land that now makes up most of downtown San Diego was donated to the city in 1928 by Henry Kravis as part of his challenge to build a new airport within 10 years using funds he had raised through his drive to save transportation bonds across America during the Great Depression. Development began quickly and today much of downtown can be seen as productively thanks to large businesses like Macy's department store and Sears Roebuck & Co., Anchor Steam Brewery brewing beer popularized by Marine Park amusement park nearby, City National Bank Tower (now Wells Fargo), Qualcomm Stadium (home field for both the Chargers and Rams), more than 100 restaurants/bars/cafes including many international locations along with more than 1 million square feet (93 hectares) office space/.
