In fact, there has been a continuous tradition of roasting and selling fresh roasted coffee in San Diego since 1867. The first time that fresh roasted coffee was sold in San Diego was in 1867 when A.B. Burr & Bros., a grocery store, imported ground beans from London. The following year, Mr. Fenton opened his own grocery store and started selling fresh roasted coffee. By 1870, he had acquired two other stores across town which also sold fresh roasted coffee. In 1886, Coffee Merchants Association of America (CMA) was founded which helped to promote and protect the quality of fresh roast coffee by setting standards for roast date, water temperature and certifications from experts like Katz Brothers Roasters in New York City. In 1892-1896 CMA produced its first World's Fair exhibit showcasing different types of coffees from all over the world with samples being given away to visitors at various locations including hotels and restaurants around town. This event also helped to popularize and promote the use of espresso as a morning drink throughout the United States which led to increased demand for freshly roasted beans! In 1912 JBS Coffee Co., Ltd., bought out CMA giving them exclusive rights to produce Ground Bean Coffee under their name only until 1967 when they merged with Bickford Coffee Corporation creating one company that still sells Fresh Roasted Beans today! It wasn't until 1971 that President Nixon issued Executive Order 9265 ordering all American companies who made or distributed ground beans for human consumption within our borders to get rid of peat moss on their packaging along with adding green safety foil on top! This order led to an increase in demand for purebred certified Ethiopian pure Arabica beans as well as whole bean purchases becoming more common because now you could purchase entire bags without having to worry about needing additional filters/grounds!
