In 1821, Mexico ceded California to the United States. The area now known as San Diego was part of Alta California and became part of the Mexican territory of Baja California. In 1848, following the Mexican-American War, the US acquired what is now San Diego County from Mexico. The first European settlers in what is today San Diego were Spanish Missionaries who arrived in 1769. The Mission Santa Anita stood on Rancho Otay Mesa near present-day Kearny Mesa. The mission was abandoned by 1800 because of a outbreak of smallpox that killed most of the missionaries and their families. A new Mission Santa Margarita was built on Rancho Rinconada in 1821 and served until 1835 when it also fell victim to smallpox and its inhabitants were lost forever to this disease. A decade later, an act of Congress designated April 6th as National Hispanic Heritage Day to recognize America’s historic relationship with Hispanics through culture, history, literature, art and other forms of expression. This date marks the beginning of Hispanic settlement in what is today San Diego County. In 1853 rancho supervisor José Joaquin Crespí granted Developer Sutter land east of downtown for development into a town called Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Our Lady Of Guadalupe). Atop this early creation there developed a nucleus around which would become the city we currently know! The Townsite Act passed by Congress in 1860 authorized Mayor James Wickersham to purchase land from 2nd Lt Josefina Martinez for $2 million within existing limits then bounded by 19th Street south; 21st Street west; 8th Avenue north; State Route 76 east; finally Ivar Nunez Boulevard west where he founded City Hall which still stands today on Park Row at 5800 block OF (Old Post Office) Streets cornering Ivar Nunez Boulevard - one block north/south/east/west from Plaza de Mayo now renamed Globe Park! The original population number given for Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe was estimated at 100 residents but actual census data reveals only 12 residents resided withinCity Limits prior to incorporation on January 1st 1863 when all citizens within corporate limits were duly sworn in before Deputy Mayor Francisco Sanchez at City Hall Annex located just northeast corner Paseo Union Ave./San Pedro Sula Rd./Ivar Nunez Blvd./Alameda St./New Market Place
