In 1893 Juan Ponce de Leon discovered oil off the coast of California and began exploring for petroleum resources; this led to an increase in traffic on Highway 1 which necessitated the construction of a new interchange, now known as I-5 near downtownSan Diego. In 1907 John Waddell founded Junta Park Coffee Company onetime land that adjoined Rancho Santa Fehue (now Hillcrest).Waddell imported Columbian coffee from Panama for his company which he named after King Manuel II of Spain who had sent him some beans as a gift. In 1915 Waddell donated land to the City of San Diego for its first park, Junta Park Recreation Area. The early years leading up to World War II saw an intense rivalry between two major American coffee companies: Roebuck & Co., headquartered in New York City, and Maxwell House Coffee Company, based in Philadelphia. However, during World War II Maxwell House prevailed thanks to their marketing abilities and distributing millions of cups of brewed coffee through military bases all over the world. After World War II Maxwell House transitioned into soft drinks production while Roebuck & Co continued as a commercial kitchen supplier until it merged with Kraft Foods Incorporated in 1984. In 1769, Gaspar de Portolà discovered San Diego when sailing his ship "Almirante" near what is now the city. The Spaniard named it Yuma Creek after the Yaqui people who lived in that area. After finding out about this oil business from another sailor, Cabrillo recommended that ships use Point Loma as an anchorage for their moorings because of its clear waters and good climate for growing crops. The first permanent residents were Mexican soldiers who built Fort Tejon on what is now Mission Valley in 1821. The U.S. military built Fort Yuma on land leased from Mexico between 1846 and 1848 to protect Americans living in California during the Mexican–American War. In 1850, the U.S. government acquired all of Alta California (the present-day Los Angeles County) through purchase of Native American land at Rancho Cucamonga; therefore, San Diego was part of Alta California until January 9,1851 when it became a part of Riverside County On March 14, 1914, President Woodrow Wilson issued Executive Order 12652 which ordered all personal property within 100 miles (160 kilometers) of any coast or port be seized without compensation to owners or anyone else involved in its seizure without judicial process or trial if not surrendered within 24 hours with proof thereof to local law enforcement officers responsible for maintaining public order; this order broadened into Law Enforcement Order 13465 which became effective on October 1st 1915 During World War II (1939-1945), Naval Ship Base Stockton was established at Camp Pendleton adjacent to Balboa Park with commandos training amphibious warfare troops and naval aviators under Lieutenant Commander Elwin Farragut flying over beaches during Operation Neptune's Spear aka Battle Of Leyte Gulf). On December 8th 1941 Japanese forces bombed Pearl Harbor resulting in America declaring war against Japan (January 3rd 1942 - February 2nd 1942 USS Arizona sunk by torpedoes while attacking Truk Atoll killing more than 200 US Marines including Admiral Nagumo and Vice Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto) On January 20th 1945 USS bombardier's mate First Class John Wetherbee died as a result of injuries sustained when his airplane collided with an object high up in the sky while working over TokyoBay just before landfall
