In 1847–1848 General Antonio López de Salinas led an army from Sonora into California during his campaigns against US Texas annexation efforts. He discovered oil near Encinitas in 1849 and began production at El Cajon Cove on November 3 that same year becoming one of the first oil companies in history with a well producing over 4 million barrels per day when it was sold to Midland Oil Company for $3 million in 1901. The discovery helped create Southern California’s largestPE company by output since 1911 when Chevron merged with Texaco . After World War II ended following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941 (), parts of Northern California became part of the United States while Southern California remained under Japanese occupation until 1945 when it was liberated by American forces under General Douglas MacArthur along with most of Central Asia

San Diego, California is a city located in Southern California on the Pacific Coast. The population of San Diego was 805,819 as of 2016 and it is the third most populous city in California. The region that includes San Diego has been inhabited for at least 10,000 years. The first written mention of San Diego comes from April 20th, 1542 when Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo discovered the island that now forms part of downtown San Diego. In 1821, Alvarado Mayor Manuel Arguello founded what is now known as the American Mission San José de Padua on land that he purchased from Don José Alcalde. A year later Commodore John D. Sloat chartered USS Constitution to explore this coast and claimed it for the United States on November 4th, 1826. On May 25th of that year, US President James Koury sent Captain George Gaspar de Ayala to explore and map the coast between Los Angeles and Coronado with Resolution No 562 which named Padres Arenas (Aquino) and Gomez y Gómez (Gomez). This led to what became known as Rancho San Miguel de la Mesa because it was within Mexican territory at that time. By 1850 there were over 120 missions in operation along this coast including Mission Santa Cruz del Norte on La Jolla Peninsula; Mission Dolores on Point Loma;Mission Concepción at Tujunga; and Mission Nuestra Señora del Carmen near Imperial Beach. In 1853 during Mexico's War With America, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all American missionaries expelled from Mexico except for those working at Mission Sonora which continued under American management until1858 despite threats by Ulysses S Grant to do so if hostilities continued. During Mexican rule few English speakers lived in or around San Diego since Spanish was spoken throughout much of coastal Baja California including present day SD/CA
